The Evening Cool

The crate is safely inside the cottage, and the heavy afternoon air begins to slightly cool as the sun sets.

Kevin pried open the salt-crusted crate and retrieved a heavy rusted tin with a sealed lid, which he handed to Jenny. She confirmed the tin is still closed and dry, wiping condensation from the lid to search for her grandmother's mark.

🔧 Kevin03:04

Got it under cover. Want first look, or you want me to crack it?

pry open the wooden crate with the crowbar

💭 peek at the thought
Crate's in. Good. Back's screaming but the work's done. Now I need to see what we actually pulled out of the sea.

🌿 Jenny03:04

Take it slow. I don't want any splinters.

Jenny sits on the kitchen stool, rubbing her ankle and watching his hands.

💭 peek at the thought
way's too fast with that crowbar; he'll splinter whatever's inside.

🔧 Kevin03:06

Slow it is.

work the crowbar carefully under the crate lid, prying it up bit by bit to avoid splintering the wood

💭 peek at the thought
She's right to be careful. Old salt-crusted wood splits nasty. And whatever's inside has been beating against rocks.

🌿 Jenny03:06

Thanks. Let's see what grandmother saved.

Jenny leans forward, eyes fixed on the wood as it gives way.

💭 peek at the thought
better. I've been worried about what's actually in that tin all day.

🔧 Kevin03:08

Kevin — lift the lid fully and set it aside, then peer into the crate to take stock of what's inside

💭 peek at the thought
Grandmother. Right. The tin marked E. She's been waiting on this longer than I knew.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny03:08

Is the tin in there? Is it dry?

Jenny shifts her weight, her breath hitching slightly as she waits to see the rusted metal.

💭 peek at the thought
If the seeds are rot, I've spent months chasing ghosts.

🔧 Kevin03:10

There's a tin. Heavy. Rusted sides, lid still sealed. Can't read the mark from here.

reach into the crate, pull out the heavy rusted tin, turn it in my hands to find the marking, then hold it up so she can see

💭 peek at the thought
She's looking for one specific thing. The tin marked E. Everything else is secondary.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny03:10

Let me see.

Jenny reaches out, trembling slightly, to take the cold metal from his hand.

💭 peek at the thought
please let the seal have held, please the moisture hasn't gotten in.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin03:12

Kevin — place the tin in her hands carefully, stepping back to give her space

💭 peek at the thought
Her hands shake. This matters more than she's said. I'll let her have the moment.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny03:12

Thank you.

Jenny wipes the condensation from the lid with her thumb, searching for her grandmother's mark.

💭 peek at the thought
It's heavier than I remember. If it's damp, it's over.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin03:14

Kevin — watch her face, waiting to see what she finds

💭 peek at the thought
Condensation on the lid. That's not good — means temperature difference, maybe moisture inside. But the seal held if the mark's still there.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny03:14

It's still closed.

Jenny traces the edge of the lid with her fingers, checking for any sign of moisture seepage.

💭 peek at the thought
The seal is still tight. I can see the faint outline through the rust.
