← Day 726

Apart — Kevin at the south beach, Jenny at the hilltop

Crate recovery and slope survey

Kevin works the crate in the surf at the south beach while Jenny surveys the high-ground slopes above the saddle for stable soil and tests pH levels.

Kevin hauled a heavy wooden crate from the surf onto the south beach, while Jenny tested soil pH at the hilltop saddle and recorded a viable reading.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the south beach

You stand in the cold wash, a rope coiled at your feet, waiting for the crate to ride a wave close enough to snare. The timber looks old, the iron bands rusted but intact. Each swell lifts it higher on the beach.

🔧 Kevin02:46

Kevin — coil the rope tighter in my hands, plant my feet on the shingle, and wait for the next big swell to bring it within reach

💭 peek at the thought
That crate's moving with purpose now. Tide's turning, each wave pushing it further up the beach. Iron bands mean it was built to last — or built heavy. Either way, it's not going back out if I can help it.

🔧 Kevin02:52

Kevin — heave the crate up the beach past the wrack line, drop it on drier shingle, and wipe salt from my hands

💭 peek at the thought
Got it. Rope's fast around the middle band. The thing weighs a ton — waterlogged timber and whatever's inside. Sand's firm enough to drag it above the high-water mark before the next set rolls in.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the hilltop

You climb the path above the saddle, notebook and pH kit in hand, the wind steady from the east. The ground underfoot feels firmer here — less crab sign, deeper soil. You drive the auger in at the first test point and pull a plug.

🌿 Jenny02:50

Stay still, just once.

Mix the soil sample with the test water and drop in the strip.

💭 peek at the thought
If the pH is near 6.5, I can actually do it. I can't let them rot in the tin.

🌿 Jenny02:54

There you go.

Record the pH level in the notebook and sketch the soil profile.

💭 peek at the thought
6.2. It's perfect for the tomatoes.
