Second cribbing course and shade cloth repair

Rain lashes the north ridge bench. Kevin drives stakes for the second cribbing course while Jenny, back from the porch, ties off the west shade cloth anchor with new oak stakes and the spare roll. The wind gusts hard from the west, testing the fresh tar seals.

Kevin drove the third oak stake for the west shade cloth anchor until it seated firmly in the clay layer at eighteen inches, then guided Jenny to sit on the stacked spruce trunks while he finished the anchor work. Jenny leaned heavily against the garden wall, her ankle throbbing, and watched rain wash grit into the charred spruce cribbing before accepting Kevin's help to sit down.

🌿 Jenny04:45

Watch the tension on that line, Kevin! If the oak pulls, the whole row goes.

Squat low to check the seating of the second way plank, wincing as my ankle throbs under the weight.

💭 peek at the thought
The tar won't set if the wind keeps lifting it, and the soil is turning to soup again.

Oak's green. Won't bite like the spruce. You want me to drive the deadmen deeper while you're down there?

drive the third oak stake for the west shade cloth anchor with the mallet, checking its bite in the softened soil

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the oak stakes — they're green wood, won't hold like the charred spruce if the ground keeps softening. But she's favoring that ankle again, shifting weight to the good leg every time she crouches. The antibiotics should've taken the edge off by now.

🌿 Jenny04:46

Yes, hit the clay layer. The top six inches are just useless silt right now.

Reach out to pat the mud around the base of the waybing, my fingers shaking from the cold.

💭 peek at the thought
If he doesn't go deeper, the next gale will rip the whole thing out like a tooth.

Clay's at eighteen inches here. You need to sit before you fall over.

swing the mallet harder, driving the oak stake down until the resistance changes — the solid thunk of clay — then step back and test its hold with a boot against the base

💭 peek at the thought
Her fingers are shaking. Cold, or the infection flaring? She's been on the doxycycline three days now. Should be past the worst of it. But she's been on her feet since dawn, hauling gravel up that slick path.

🌿 Jenny04:48

I'm fine. way... make sure the Anchor doesn't shift when the wind hits peak.

Lean heavily against the garden wall, watching the rain wash grit into the charred spruce.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm not falling, I just need to see if the soil stability actually matches the sketch.

🔧 Kevin04:50

You're not fine. Sit. I'll finish the anchor and the second course.

grab her upper arm, steady her toward the garden wall's driest stretch, and guide her down onto the stacked spruce trunk sections — then turn back to the stake, driving the mallet home with measured hits until the oak seats in clay

💭 peek at the thought
She's not fine. The shake in her fingers, the way she's bracing against the wall — that's not cold. The metronidazole finished yesterday. Doxycycline's got two days left. Infection can flare when the second antibiotic drops. She walked the ridge in forty-knot wind two days ago. Carried gravel up this path this morning. Hasn't stopped moving.
