Crate recovery and supply boat watch

Kevin and Jenny stand together at the dock rail watching the wooden crate surge in the south beach surf. The tide is falling fast, exposing the crate's barnacled hull. Clouds stack low on the southwest horizon. The supply boat is due tomorrow at high tide. They need to decide whether to wade for the crate now or wait.

Kevin staged the recovery rope and come-along at the south beach high-water mark, then returned to the dock to inspect the dinghy engine mounts and propeller shaft alignment. Jenny reached the shortwave radio, scanned 2182 and Tom's frequency, and heard a news fragment about Nordic leaders calling Putin before the barometer held steady at 995 hPa.

Your call. But if we wait, the next high tide brings the supply boat — and this crate might not be here. I can wade it. You hold the line from the beach.

walk toward the south beach, uncoiling the new half-inch rope from the shed as I go

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's dropping fast. Crate's heavy, barnacled, rolling in the surf — if we wait for tomorrow's high tide it could smash on the rocks or drift out again. But wading now means cold water, slippery footing, and a rising swell. Jenny's ankle won't take uneven bottom. I'll need to do the hauling; she spots and tends the line.

Wait. The tide is dropping too fast and that swell is turning. Let me get the radio first.

Lean against the rotting timber of the jetty, shifting weight to my good leg to watch the horizon.

If he goes out there alone now, the current will take him and I can't pull him back with this ankle.

Radio first. I'll stage the rope and the come-along at the high-water mark.

turn back toward the cottage, pulling the coil of new half-inch rope and the come-along from the shed, laying them ready at the beach edge above the surge line

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the swell turning. The period's shortening — waves stacking steeper as the water shallows. Radio's a good call: if the supply boat's running late or early, it changes everything. And if I get pinned under that crate, she needs to call it in.

Don't get too close. The sand is shifting today.

Reach into my pocket and trace the cold metal of my grandmother's seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
way's going to jump in the moment that crate snags on a rock.

Rope's fifty feet. Come-along's rated two ton. I'll keep the bitter end on shore.

secure the rope's standing end around the driftwood log jammed in the dune grass, feed the running end through the come-along hook, check the pawl engagement

💭 peek at the thought
Sand shifting means the crate's settling differently with each wave — could roll sudden, could bury itself. She's not just talking about the beach. The tin in her pocket, the ridge sketch she hid, the way she's been choosing the north slope over the cottage... she's marking ground. I won't stop her. But I'll make sure the rope's long enough to reach her if the bottom drops out.

🌿 Jenny10:39

If the crate starts to roll, don't chase. Wait for me.

Walk toward the radio, limping slightly with each step on the wet wood.

💭 peek at the thought
He's too confident in the gear; the island doesn't care about ratings.
