A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin brewed coffee and sat with Jenny on the porch as the barometer held at 982 hPa. They discussed storm preparations and salt reserves while the clouds thickened over the north ridge. The night settled in with the generator running and lines doubled.

The pressure is dropping too fast. We won't be getting anything done.

Sit on the edge of the porch bench, rubbing the swollen ankle while watching the clouds thicken over the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the tide, and the air feels heavy enough to swallow. I need to move those leaves.

Generator's topped up. Lines are doubled. Dock held at high tide. We wait.

Walk to the kitchen, pull two tin mugs from the shelf, set the kettle on the wood stove, and measure coffee into the pot.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. 982 and steady means it's holding for now, but that drop this afternoon was sharp. The swell's already pushing against the dock. Best to secure what we can and wait it out.

The north ridge soil's holding. Maybe tomorrow I can finally plant the seed tin." "Bring me a mug. I want to sketch the ridge layout before the rain comes.

Stand up slowly, wincing as the ankle twists slightly, then walk to the window and trace a finger along the sill where salt stains have gathered. </think>THOUGHT: Seed tin. Soil.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks doubling lines will stop the sea, but the real work is in the dirt. In the soil.

Careful on that ankle. Mug's coming.

Pour coffee into both mugs, carry them to the porch bench, set one beside her at the window, and sit with the other.

💭 peek at the thought
She's pushing the ankle too soon. But the ridge soil held through the last blow — lime beds at 6.8, untreated at 5.5. If the barometer holds, tomorrow's a planting window. I'll bring the mug and the notebook.

🌿 Jenny16:53

The pressure is bottoming out. If the boat doesn't come, I'm out of salt.

Take the warm mug, the heat seeping into my palms, and watch the clouds swallow the peak of the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
The air is thick enough to chew, and my ankle is screaming. I need to find that patch of earth.

Two sacks of lime in the shed. Salt we make if the boat misses. Tide pools at low water, evaporation trays on the roof. Slow, but it works.

Take a sip of coffee, eyes on the cloud bank rolling over the north ridge, the wind shifting colder.

💭 peek at the thought
Salt. She's thinking preservation — fish, seeds, the sea beet harvest. We've got the two burlap sacks of lime in the shed, but salt's different. Can't grow it. The supply boat's due in seven days if the weather holds. If it doesn't... we've got the tide pools, the evaporation setup. Slow. But doable.
