Waiting out the downpour

Kevin and Jenny sit on the porch as the steady rain drums against the roof. The water tank is reaching its 400-litre capacity while Jenny watches the rising tide.

The rain continues its steady, drumming rhythm against the cottage roof as the morning settles. Kevin has secured the cottage shutter, now firm with the new bolts, though the ground around the foundation remains saturated from the overflow. Jenny has moved to the spring to check the water quality, navigating the slick, muddy path in the downpour.

Tank's topped off. East shutter's still loose — I'll secure it after breakfast. You heading up the ridge today?

pour the last of the kettle into my tin mug, blow steam off the surface, and settle back against the porch post

💭 peek at the thought
Tank's full. Good. Barometer holding at 981 — steady's better than falling, but this rain isn't letting up. Tide's high, wind's picking up. Shutter on the east wall's still loose; heard it rattle last night. Need to batten that before dark if the forecast holds. Jenny's quiet. Ankle's wrapped fresh, but she's favouring it. She'll push through the ridge transect if I don't say something. Not my place to stop her, but I'll have the dinghy ready at the dock if she needs a lift back.

Maybe later. I need to check the pH near the spring first.

Take a slow sip of the lukewarm coffee and traces the outline of the mug in my hand with my thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
The soil is too heavy today; if I go up now, I'll just slip down the embankment.

🔧 Kevin17:09

Spring run's shorter. Less climbing. Overflow pipe's clear?

set my mug on the rail, pull the collar of my jacket tighter against the damp wind, and glance at the tank's overflow spout where water arcs into the drainage trench

💭 peek at the thought
She's avoiding the ridge. Smart — ground's saturated, ankle's not right. But she'll go anyway, just calling it something else. Spring's closer, easier return. I'll check the overflow while she's out; tank's full and this rain isn't stopping.

🌿 Jenny17:13

I'll check it while I'm down there.

Stand up slowly, feeling the sharp pull in my ankle as I shift my weight to the good leg.

💭 peek at the thought
It's clear for now, but the silt is starting to build up.

🔧 Kevin17:13

Take the hand trowel. Path's washed out past the second switchback.

push off the porch post, grab the heavy claw hammer and the box of 10mm stainless bolts from beside the door, and head around the east wall to the loose shutter

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving slow. Ankle's worse than she'll admit. Spring's downhill from here — easy going out, hell coming back up if the track's slick. I should've built that handrail last month. Too late now. I'll have the dinghy at the dock by noon tide if she needs it. First, shutters.

🌿 Jenny17:15

Watch your step on the mud.

Pick up the hand trowel from the bench and start walking toward the spring, keeping my hand light on the stone wall for balance.

💭 peek at the thought
If he's fixing the shutter, I can at least get to the spring without being watched.

🔧 Kevin17:15

Back by high slack. I'll have the dinghy at the dock.

drive the first 150mm stainless through-bolt through the shutter hinge mortise, the washer and nyloc nut biting into the greenheart sister plate, then reach for the second bolt

💭 peek at the thought
She's steady enough on the flat. The climb back's what matters. Mud's slick on the stone — seen her slip there twice this month. I'll finish the shutter quick and meet her at the dock with the dinghy at high slack. Tide turns in two hours.

🌿 Jenny17:17

Don't take too long, the rain is picking up.

Limp toward the spring, eyes fixed on the ground where the water is pooling in the roots.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so efficient with the tools, like everything is just a mechanical fix.

🔧 Kevin17:17

Two bolts and done. Meet you there.

drive the second 150mm stainless through-bolt home, snug the nyloc with the 19mm wrench, test the shutter — solid, no play — then walk the cottage corner to the overflow trench where water runs clear through the copper spillway onto the gra

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's hardening. Good — tests the shutter fix. She's halfway to the spring path. Ankle's holding. I'll finish the second bolt, check the overflow trench while I'm at the corner, then walk the dock line before the tide peaks.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny17:19

I'm already here.

Reach into the cold water of the spring, dipping the pH

💭 peek at the thought
The drainage is working, but the pH at the spring is going to be a mess if it keeps piling up.
