Preparing for the pressure

Kevin and Jenny stand by the garden wall as the heavy air hangs over the island. Jenny checks the moisture of the heirloom beds while Kevin monitors the falling barometer reading on the porch.

Kevin struggled to clear the garden in the saturated soil, failing to find enough space for the deadman anchors. Jenny worked efficiently, clearing a clear area for the next anchor despite the rising humidity and the pain in her ankle.

Wind's backing west. Shade cloth on the tomatoes won't hold if it hits thirty-five.

walk to the garden shed and pull the extra timber battens and heavy twine

💭 peek at the thought
The air's thick enough to drink. Barometer's still falling — 982 and dropping. She's checking soil moisture like the numbers matter, but the real tell is the swell direction out past the point. If the wind holds west-northwest past midnight, the north channel turns ugly. Should've secured the shade cloth anchors yesterday.

🌿 Jenny18:21

I'll get the stakes. The south slope is still too soft anyway.

Jenny walk to the cottage to grab the garden fork and the heavy mallet.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, the salt will scour the life off the seedlings if I don't anchor them now.

🔧 Kevin18:22

Deadmen anchors by the shed. Clay won't hold stakes.

pick up the coil of heavy twine and the bundle of cedar stakes from the shed floor

💭 peek at the thought
She's favoring the left leg again. Ankle's not right. She'll push through it anyway — always does. The south slope's weeping clay won't take stakes deep enough to hold. Should tell her to use the deadmen anchors we cut last week, but she'll hear it as criticism.

🌿 Jenny18:23

Then we'll use the deadmen. I need the crowbar.

Jenny drops the garden fork and turns toward the shed, limping slightly as her ankle pulses.

💭 peek at the thought
If the clay is too unstable for stakes, I have to dig for the deadmen. I can't lose grandmother's seeds to a runoff.

🔧 Kevin18:24

Crowbar's by the crate, sap on the grip. Deadmen are cut — spruce offcuts behind the shed. Just need the mallet.

hand her the mallet from the shed wall hook

💭 peek at the thought
The crowbar's sap-covered from prying the crate. She doesn't need it for deadmen — just a mallet and the pre-cut lengths. She's making work to stay moving. The limp's worse than yesterday.

🌿 Jenny18:37

I have it. I'll get the crowbar and start digging.

Jenny takes the mallet and moves toward the crate, her eyes scanning the ground for the crowbar.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the mechanics of it, and I'm just worried about the soil washing away.

🔧 Kevin18:37

Kevin — pick up two of the pre-cut deadman lengths and carry them to the tomato row

💭 peek at the thought
She's not listening. Or she's choosing not to. The deadmen are pre-cut, pre-drilled — just need driving and tying off. The crowbar's for prying, not digging in clay. Let her find it. She'll work the frustration out on the ground.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny18:39

I'll clear the weeds around the first set first.

Jenny picks up the crowbar from the crate and moves to the far edge of the garden bed.

💭 peek at the thought
If he's starting the anchors, I need to get the holes deep enough. The clay is like paste today.

🔧 Kevin18:39

Kevin — drive the first deadman into the clay at the windward corner of the tomato bed, using the mallet

💭 peek at the thought
Weeds first. Then stakes. Then deadmen. Then twine. She's building sequence to delay the part where she has to drive anything hard with that ankle. The crowbar's a prop. I'll set the first two deadmen while she clears — saves her the hammer swings.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny18:41

Let me see if I can clear enough space for the next one.

Jenny kneels in the mud, using the crowbar to scrape away the grit and weeds around the first anchor.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually doing it. If we can't hold this patch, the whole slope is gone by next week.
