night watch and engine parts

The generator runs steady outside the cottage. Inside, the Yanmar parts are laid out on the workbench in assembly order: sleeve, piston, rings, gaskets. Kevin sits at the table with the micrometer and service manual. Jenny has the notebook open to the Carex pages, pen poised but not moving. The shortwave radio crackles faintly from the shelf. Outside, the tide is high and the wind gusts against the shutters.

Inside the cottage, the air is thick with the smell of drying sea beet and old woodsmoke. Kevin is hunched over the Yanmar housing, the micrometer held steady as he measures the end gap of the piston rings. Jenny sits on the bench, rubbing her knees with a grimace, watching his hands with a sharp, weary focus.
