Waiting for the tide
Jenny reaches the intercept trench just as the tide begins to turn.
The steady rain continues to drum against the cottage roof, a relentless sound that fills the humid air. The water tank has finally reached its 400-litre capacity, water beginning to spill over from the overflow pipe. Outside, the tide is rising faster than the charts predicted, quickly submerging the southern rock pools that Jenny had hoped to forage.
Kevin — walk to the dinghy, check the Yanmar's raw water intake screen for weed and jellyfish, then bleed the fuel system at the filter housing while the engine's cold.

(Quiet, just breathing.)
Kneels in the mud, probing the earth with a finger to check the depth of the water layer.

Kevin — crack the Yanmar's fuel filter bleed screw, pump the primer lever until diesel runs clean without bubbles, then tighten it down and check the raw water impeller housing for cracks while I'm at it.

The tide's coming in, Kevin.
Pulls a pencil from behind her ear and starts sketching the erosion pattern along the edge of the trench.

Filter's clear. Impeller housing holds. Engine's ready if you need the pump.
Wipe hands on a rag, walk up the slope to the trench with the spade and a handful of cedar stakes, drive them into the downslope lip where the water's undermining the bank.

I'll check the pump when the rain lets up.
Squashes a handful of the mud between her fingers, testing the consistency and the grit of the soil.

Clay's binding. Grit means the shale layer's still intact under the slip plane.
Drive the last cedar stake at the trench's north end, tie a length of twine between stakes at the waterline to mark the high-water mark, then walk back to the cottage for the radio check at 1400.

Don't forget the radio check.
Marks the high-water line in her notebook, noting the height of the tide relative to the stakes.

1400. 2182. I'll log it.
Walk back to the cottage porch, key the shortwave mic, call the supply boat on 2182 kHz for the scheduled check.

Sorrel Island, this is Jenny. Checking in for the week.
Sit on the porch step, watching the rain fill the water tank, waiting for a response through the hiss.

Kevin — lean against the doorframe, arms folded, listening to the static and her voice on the air, notebook ready to log whatever comes back.

Still nothing but the static and the rain.
Trace the line of the erosion on the sketch, pencil lead snapping where the soil is thinning.
