Evening radio contact and meal

Kevin and Jenny sit at the kitchen table as the generator runs and rain drums on the roof. The shortwave radio is warmed up, tuned to the harbourmaster's frequency for the 1400 check-in. A pot of limpet broth steams on the stove, and the medevac forms lie staged in the ditch bag by the loft ladder.

The air is heavy with the humidity of the wet season, and the sky remains a flat, oppressive grey. Inside the cottage, the smell of simmering limpet broth and salt fills the room as they wait for the rain. Outside, a sudden gust of wind has brought a large spruce branch down across the path, blocking the route to the north ridge.

🌿 Jenny00:07

The radio is buzzing too much today.

Reach for the pencil and sketch the way the water is pooling in the corner of the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come in two days, the ridge is going to wash away with the seeds still in it.

Atmospherics. Front's sitting on us. I'll tweak the gain.

reach up to the radio shelf and adjust the RF gain knob down slightly, then fine-tune the squelch

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the buzz. Atmospherics from the front. I should adjust the RF gain and back off the squelch a touch — might clean it up without losing the harbourmaster.

🌿 Jenny00:09

It doesn't matter, the ridge is still soup.

Trace the edge of the grandmother's seed tin with a thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
It's always the equipment or the weather, never the soil.

🔧 Kevin00:09

Soil's not ready. Won't be till the bar breaks.

set the coffee mug down on the table and pull the notebook closer, flipping to the page with the north ridge drainage sketch

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the radio. She's talking about the garden, the trenches, the soil that won't drain. The ridge work she did today — intercept trenches in clay that holds water like a bowl. She's frustrated. Tired. The ankle's slowing her more than she admits.

🌿 Jenny00:15

The seeds won't wait forever for a forecast.

Lean back and watch the steam rise from the broth.

💭 peek at the thought
I have spent months waiting for the bar to break while the rot sets in.

🔧 Kevin00:15

Pot them up. Bridge trays. Newspaper pots, crate soil, lime. Buys two weeks.

tap the notebook page showing the ridge layout, then push back from the table and stand

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Heirloom tomato and pepper seedlings are at true leaf in trays, some damping-off already. They need soil, not forecast. But the ridge beds are saturated — planting into soup invites root rot. Could pot them up into larger containers as a bridge. We have newspaper, the crate soil, lime. It's work. More trays. More watering. But it buys time.

🌿 Jenny00:17

I don't have enough lime for the whole ridge anyway.

Stand up and walk to the window, staring at the grey blur of the overgrown garden.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks he can buy time with plastic trays, but the acidity is eating the whole slope.

🔧 Kevin00:17

Boat's got lime. Three days at high tide. Harbourmaster said hold fast.

walk to the stove and lift the lid on the pot, stirring the limpet broth slowly

💭 peek at the thought
She's calculating. Two burlap sacks of lime left, half used on the lower beds. The ridge is bigger than what remains. She knows the math — she did the pH transects, logged every reading. Untreated ridge soil sits 5.5–5.8. Tomatoes need 6.2 minimum. She's not asking me to magic more lime. She's stating the constraint. The supply boat has more. Three days if the bar breaks. If.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:19

The soil is already moving, Kevin. It won't hold the trenches.

Trace the condensation on the glass with a shaky fingernail.

💭 peek at the thought
Three days? If the rain holds, the north ridge will be a landslide by then.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:19

Then we shore it. Greenheart sister plates under the eaves. Cribbing stones. Bitumen membrane in the trench — already laid. Bamboo stakes on the spillway. It's not forever. Just till the boat.

ladle broth into two tin mugs, set one on the table near her sketchbook

💭 peek at the thought
She's seen it. The weeping clay on the north slope — she dug the intercept trenches today, watched the water fill them faster than she could dig. The soil plugs she pulled showed saturated profiles. The cedar stakes she drove yesterday have already shifted. The tarp over the drainage bed is weighted but the ground underneath is turning to slurry. She's not wrong. The ridge is failing in slow motion.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:21

The seeds will rot in the tin before the boat even clears the harbor.

Take the mug, the warmth seeping into my palms, and look at the half-finished sketch of the garden bed.

💭 peek at the thought
He's talking about stones and plates while the earth is literally liquefying under my feet.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:21

Newspaper pots. Porch. Under the eaves. Controlled drainage. Save what we can.

blow across my own mug, then set it down and pull the bundle of old newspapers from the corner toward the table

💭 peek at the thought
Heirloom tomato, pepper, basil — some packets already compromised by mold at the edges. The tin marked E is sealed, contents unknown. The grandmother's tin has viable packets sorted by bed zone. But the seedlings in trays are the immediate loss: damping-off taking lettuce and pepper cells, tomatoes showing salt stress on leaves. If the ridge won't hold and the boat's three days out at best... she's right. The timeline doesn't work. Unless we pot up now. Newspaper pots, crate soil, the lime we have. Move the strongest seedlings off the ridge plan entirely. Grow them out in containers on the porch, under the eaves. Controlled drainage. It's not the garden she dreamed. But it saves the genetics.
