The Calm Before the Arrival

Kevin and Jenny stand on the damp dock as the overcast sky hangs heavy over the water. Kevin checks the tension on the dinghy's lines while Jenny monitors the barometer for any shift in the pressure.

Kevin attempted to pry up the loose dock plank with the crowbar, but the tool slipped on the wet wood without gaining purchase. Jenny checked the generator's fuel filter housing and identified that the stripped clamp was the primary source of the fuel issue.

The pressure is dropping. We need to secure the wayhy before the rain hits.

Trace the rot on the dock planks with my thumb, noting where the wood gives way.

💭 peek at the thought
The boat is coming tomorrow, but the soil is still too heavy to hold anything. I'm tired of waiting for a sign that raises comes.

Rot's spread past the mark. Third plank, seaward side. Swell's lifting it on the surge.

crouch at the third plank, press thumb into the chalk line, feel the give, then stand and check the dinghy's doubled stern spring tension

💭 peek at the thought
Pressure's falling faster than the barometer says. She's reading the sky, not the dial. The rot line on the third plank from seaward has moved — chalk mark from yesterday doesn't line up. Swell's already pushing under the dock.

🌿 Jenny00:37

I'll swap them tomorrow when the boat brings the heartwood. Just needs to hold tonight.

Grab the crowbar from the shed and start prying the loose edge of the third plank.

💭 peek at the thought
If I don't replace those planks now, the whole jetty will be lost to the salt before the boat even arrives.

🔧 Kevin00:38

Let the tide do it. Crowbar slips, you lose the plank and your hand. Wait for the ebb.

step between her and the plank, hand flat on the crowbar shaft to stop the lever, other hand on her shoulder

💭 peek at the thought
She's not waiting for the boat. Heartwood or not, she's prying a rotten plank in falling pressure with a crowbar and no backup. The surge will take her fingers if she slips.

🌿 Jenny00:39

way. We wait. But the rain won't wait for the tide.

Drop the crowbar with a heavy thud and wipe my grit-covered hands on my jeans.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, the wood is slick and my hands are shaking. I'm fighting the island and losing every time.

🔧 Kevin00:40

Generator shed first. Filter, then Yanmar. You take the kettle up, I'll meet you at the cottage.

pick up the crowbar, walk back toward the generator shed, glance at the barometer on the porch as I pass

💭 peek at the thought
She yielded. Good. The rain's close now — smell it in the wind shift. Dock holds for tonight. Need to get the Yanmar idling to top the batteries before dark, and the generator's due a filter check. She's cold and won't say it.

🌿 Jenny00:41

I'll get the water boiling. Don't forget the radio.

Walk back toward the cottage, my boots crunching on the damp gravel of the path.

💭 peek at the thought
The generator is always the first thing. I need a hot cup before the sky opens up.

🔧 Kevin00:42

Won't.

open the generator shed door, pull the fuel filter housing, inspect the clamp, reach for the spare filter from the crate stores

💭 peek at the thought
Radio check at 0800. She knows the routine better than I do. Generator filter first — clamp's questionable on the fuel line, might need the spare from the crate. Then Yanmar idle run. Then the mic. Order matters.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:43

Check the fuel line while you're there.

Enter the cottage and fill the kettle with water from the tank.

💭 peek at the thought
He's focused on the mechanics, but I'm focused on the rot. Everything here is turning to mush.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin00:44

New line. Clamp's the problem. Got a spare bolt in the workshop.

unscrew the filter housing, swap in the clean filter from the crate, wipe the housing threads, reach for the 8mm bolt in the workshop drawer to replace the stripped clamp bolt

💭 peek at the thought
Fuel line's new from the crate — marine grade, installed last month. Clamp's the weak point. Bolt stripped, holding on prayer and friction. Spare filter's clean. Swap it, tighten the clamp with the spare bolt from the workshop, bleed the line. Ten minutes.
