Approaching Squall

The first heavy drops of the wet season finally hit the dust-caked tin roof.

Kevin cleared the silt plug from the drainage trench to prevent the cottage foundation from flooding in the rain. Jenny watched the rising pools from the window while sketching the landscape patterns as the sky darkened. They later walked together to the ridge at evening to visit the stone circle shrine.

🌿 Jenny02:09

It's coming in hard, Kevin. Check the runoff on the porch.

stand up slowly, wincing as my ankle throbs, and walk to the window to watch the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
way, the pressure is breaking, though the garden will just turn to mud by tomorrow.

On it.

Walk to the porch and check the runoff at the northeast corner where the flashing was repaired.

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's heavier than forecast. Porch runoff will tell me if the northeast flashing held or if we're feeding the foundation again. Tank's near full anyway — good problem to have.

🌿 Jenny02:11

Watch the gutter. If it overflows, the drainage trench is going to fail again.

pick up my way and start drawing the way the rain is hitting the sea much leaves near the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
if that joint holds, the south slope won't be a swamp by the morning.

🔧 Kevin02:11

I'll check the gutter and the trench depth. Give me a minute.

Walk to the porch, inspect the gutter overflow edge, and measure the depth of the drainage trench near the southeast corner.

💭 peek at the thought
The gutter’s slope may still be off by a few inches. If it runs off the flash, water will soak the foundation. I need to confirm the trench depth and maybe add a secondary drain line.

🌿 Jenny02:13

Tell me if the silt is building up. I need to clear it before the storm really hits.

sit back down with a wince, rubbing my swollen ankle while watching the sky darken.

💭 peek at the thought
he's moving too slow; the soil is already saturating and I can see it pooling.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin02:13

I'll check the silt at the trench outlet and clear it if needed.

Walk down the path to the northeast foundation trench outlet, inspect silt buildup, and clear it with the hand shovel if it's blocking flow.

💭 peek at the thought
Silt's the real killer — chokes the trench, backs water into the foundation. The trench held last storm but only because I cleared it after. If it's full now, the next hour decides whether the northeast corner stays dry.

🌿 Jenny02:17

way. The water is moving faster than you are.

lean forward against the windowframe, watching the clouds bruise over the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
if he doesn't clear it fast, the whole south slope is going to wash out.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin02:17

Going.

Jog down the path to the northeast foundation trench outlet, shovel in hand.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The trench outlet is thirty meters downhill and the water's already sheeting across the path. I'm moving too slow for what's coming.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:19

Watch out for the slope!

grab my sketchbook and start sketching the way the rain is sheeting off the roof.

💭 peek at the thought
I hope he doesn't slip; that mud is looking like grease already.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin02:19

Feet first.

Move carefully down the slick clay slope to the trench outlet, testing each step before committing weight.

💭 peek at the thought
The clay's slick as grease when it rains this hard. One slip on the slope and I'm out of the fight. Feet first, eyes on footing.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:21

Focus on the outlet. If that clogs, the garden is gone.

watch him through the glass, my pencil flying across the paper as I map the rising pools.

💭 peek at the thought
he's being careful, but the water doesn't wait for caution.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin02:21

Clearing now.

Reach the trench outlet, dig out the silt plug with the hand shovel, and throw it clear of the flow path so water runs free.

💭 peek at the thought
Outlet's the choke point. If the silt dam holds, water backs up the trench, saturates the garden beds, rots every seedling we planted. Clear it now or lose the season.
