The Slippery Slip

Kevin and Jenny stand under the dock overhang as the warm rain turns the wood planks slick. Jenny tries to inspect the Yanmar's mounting bolts while Kevin checks the tide line against the rising water.

The warm rain continues to drizzle, keeping the dock planks slick and the air heavy. The tide is just beginning to turn, causing the dinghy to bob more urgently against its moorings. The rot in the south-end planks is evident as the water pulls at the softened wood, and the structural integrity of the dock is in question before the boat arrives.

🔧 Kevin01:44

Bolts first. Planks hold your weight, not the other way round. Step where I step.

Walk the seaward edge of the dock, testing each marked plank with a boot before committing weight, moving toward the Yanmar mounted in the dinghy at the jetty end.

💭 peek at the thought
She's favoring the ankle still. Good she's looking at the mounts — second pair of eyes catches what mine miss — but she shouldn't be on the dock planks wet as they are. Tide's pushing faster than the barometer said it would.

🌿 Jenny01:45

I can see the rot, Kevin. I don't need a lecture on physics while the tide is coming.

Jenny leans against the cottage support beam, shifting weight away from her injured ankle, and pulls her notebook from her pocket to sketch the way the dinghy is swaying in the swell.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's about the wood, but it's about the rot. My own is thbbing in time with the rain.

🔧 Kevin01:47

Third chalk mark. Rose two inches since we stepped out. Mount bolts?

Crouch at the Yanmar's port mount, 19mm wrench on the lower through-bolt, checking torque by feel while the dinghy lifts on a swell.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Didn't mean it as a lecture. Tide's at the third chalk mark already — rose two inches while I was talking. She's sketching the sway pattern, smart. Means she's watching the load on the mounts in real terms.

🌿 Jenny01:48

The bolts are tight, but the salt is eating the threads anyway. Look.

Jenny moves carefully to the edge of the dock, wincing as the infection in her ankle flares, and reaches out to steady the dinghy's gunwale with one hand.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the metal he doesn't see the water already pooling under the jetty.

🔧 Kevin01:48

Starboard aft. Weeping. Need to pull it, chase threads, re-bed with epoxy if the wood's sound. You shouldn't be bearing weight on that gunwale.

Tap the starboard aft bolt with the wrench handle — hollow sound under the washer — then reach for her forearm to take her weight off the dinghy.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong — salt creep on the threads, white bloom where the washers meet the timber. The starboard aft bolt's weeping rust water. She's steadying the dinghy on a bad ankle. Stubborn as the sea.

🌿 Jenny01:49

If the wood is soft, epoxy won't hold a miracle. We need new timber.

Jenny pulls her hand back from the gunwale, leaning heavily against the Analysis post to hide the throbbing in her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
It's weeping because the wood is saturated, just like my skin. Everything here is water through.

🔧 Kevin01:50

Three greenheart cores by the shed. One's eight foot, straight grain. Scarf joint on the existing stringer, through-bolted. Two tide windows if we start now. Your ankle?

Straighten, wrench back on belt, and hold a hand out — not grabbing, just offered — toward her elbow.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Epoxy in punk wood is prayer, not repair. Got three sound cores from the last dock repair stacked by the shed — greenheart, dense, salt-resistant. One's long enough for a sister plank if I scarf it proper. But that means hauling timber, cutting joints, working the tide windows. And she's hiding the pain again.

🌿 Jenny01:51

It's fine. Just the tide coming in.

Jenny ignores the hand, shifting her weight to her good leg, and stares at the rotten planks where the dinghy is bobbing.

💭 peek at the thought
Greenheart would hold, but I'm way holding myself up, let alone a scarf joint.
