Morning Rain and Engine Inspection

Kevin and Jenny stand under the dock overhang as the warm rain drums against the weathered wood. Jenny checks the tension on the Yanmar mount while Kevin monitors the tide level in the catchment tank.

Kevin carefully monitored the Yanmar engine mount while Jenny backed off the bolts to reset the washers. Jenny struggled with the starboard housing bolt, failing to reach the required torque due to worn threads and the slickness of the rain.

🌿 Jenny02:43

The bolts are loosening, Kevin. If we don't tighten them, the whole mount will shear.

Jenny reaches for the wrench in her tool belt to check the Yanmar housing.

💭 peek at the thought
The engine is vibrating again, and the hunger is starting to override the pain in my leg.

🔧 Kevin02:43

Back off a quarter turn first. Let the lock washers reset. Then torque to thirty-five. Don't muscle it.

hand her the torque wrench from the dock box, already set to 35Nm

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the bolts. Vibration's been walking them loose for weeks. The housing's already cracked on the starboard side. If she strips the threads forcing them, we're dead in the water — no spares left that fit.

🌿 Jenny02:45

I know. I just need to make sure it holds before the boat arrives.

Jenny applies the torque wrench to the bolt, loosening it just a quarter turn as instructed.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the washers; the threads are getting too thin from the salt.

🔧 Kevin02:45

Watch the starboard housing bolt. Threads are thin there. If the wrench clicks early, stop.

brace a foot against the dock stringer, eyes on the bolt head as she works

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's listening. The mount held four hours at idle yesterday — longest run since the sleeve. But the supply boat's crane will shake the whole dock when they swing diesel drums aboard. If the Yanmar jumps, the prop shaft bites the hull.

🌿 Jenny02:47

I see it.

Jenny slowly turns the wrench, watching the bolt for any sign of slipping or rounding.

💭 peek at the thought
If I strip this bolt, we're stuck on this island until the next season.

🔧 Kevin02:47

That's it. Next one port side.

shift weight, keeping the dock plank steady under her boots

💭 peek at the thought
Starboard housing bolt's the one I helicoiled last month. Held so far. But the aluminium's soft — one overtighten and the insert pulls out. She's careful. Good hands. Better than mine were at her age.

🌿 Jenny02:49

On it.

Jenny moves the wrench to the next bolt on the port side of the mount.

💭 peek at the thought
One bolt at a time. My hand is shaking more than I like.

🔧 Kevin02:49

Good. Check the lock washer seats flat.

glance at the tide mark on the piling — water's dropped another hand's breadth, slack coming

💭 peek at the thought
Port side's the fresh bolt — replaced it when the old one sheared in the swell. Clean threads. Should torque clean. Rain's easing. Barometer's steady at 976. Supply boat in nine days if the harbourmaster wasn't lying. Need the Yanmar solid before they try to lift anything heavy onto this dock.
