A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin and Jenny sit in the cottage as the pressure drops and the clouds thicken in. They discuss the supply boat's arrival and the reality of the leaking cottage despite the recent patch. Jenny removes the sticky sea beet poultice from her ankle while Kevin prepares a pot of tea.

🌿 Jenny14:29

Jenny — sit on the kitchen chair, unwrap the poultice, and open the heirloom seed tin to inspect the packets for further mold.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast and my ankle is throbbing with every pulse; I need to check those seeds one last time before the storm really hits us.

Kevin — walk to the wood stove, lift the kettle off the hook, and set it on the cold hearth to cool. Pull out the tin mug from the shelf, wipe the rim with my thumb, and set it on the table near her.

💭 peek at the thought
She's quiet again. The kind of quiet that means she's thinking about something she won't say. The seed tin's heavy in her hands — she's been through it three times this week already. Mold on the tomato packets, maybe the pepper. She'll burn what's bad and save the rest. She always saves the rest.

🌿 Jenny14:31

The boat is actually coming tomorrow, right?

Look up from the seed packets, tracing the damp edge of the tomato variety with a calloused finger.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being quiet. The kind of quiet that feels like the air before a snap.

Three days at high tide. Two-hour window. Captain acknowledged.

Lean back against the counter, arms folded. Watch her fingers on the packet edge.

💭 peek at the thought
She's asking because the barometer says 986 and falling, not because she doesn't remember the radio contact. Three days at high tide, two-hour window. Captain acknowledged on 2182. She knows. She's asking because the sky looks like it means to break us first.

🌿 Jenny14:33

Two hours is a joke if the wind shifts to the north.

Gently slide the tomato packet back into the tin and click the lid shut with a metallic thud.

💭 peek at the thought
Two hours is barely enough to get the heavy crates across if the swell increases.

🔧 Kevin14:33

Dinghy's double-tied. Storm anchor out. Engine ran clean at load yesterday. If he can't land, I'll go out to him.

Reach past her for the mug, pour the cooled kettle water into it, let the tea bag steep without pressing it. Set the mug down on the table between us.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. North wind piles the swell on the south beach, makes the landing a crapshoot even in a calm season. The skipper knows it. He'll come or he won't, and the two-hour window means nothing if the bar keeps dropping like it has been. She's not asking about the boat. She's asking if I've got the dinghy ready to go out and meet him if the launch can't make the beach.

🌿 Jenny14:38

You're not going own. Not with the barometer looking like that.

Wince as I shift my weight, peeling the sticky sea beet poultice off my skin.

💭 peek at the thought
He'd go out there in that swell with my ankle like this? He's so way.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin14:39

Not planning to. But if the launch can't make the beach and the radio goes dead, somebody has to bring the mail in.

Pick up the used poultice with two fingers, carry it to the stove, drop it in the fire. Watch it curl black. Turn back, lean against the doorframe.

💭 peek at the thought
She thinks I don't know what 986 and falling means. Thinks I've forgotten forty minutes in the Biscay, the way the water takes the heat out of you, the way the swell doesn't care about your schedule. She's wrong about that. But she's right about the ankle — the red streaks hadn't been there yesterday. The poultice pulls away skin with it. She needs the antibiotics more than the boat needs me on the water.
