The Rain Approaches

Heavy rain lashes against the tin roof as the wind picks up from the west. Kevin and Jenny sit on the porch, watching the water pool in the garden drainage trenches.

Heavy rain falls from the west, signaling an approaching storm as the pressure drops. Kevin and Jenny stay inside the cottage to monitor the rising water and manage the roof leaks. The ground becomes saturated quickly, making the brush removal project impossible for now.

It's coming too fast.

Trace the path of the runoff in the mud with a stick.

💭 peek at the thought
The drainage is going to fail on the north slope if this doesn't stop.

North ridge is the weak point. If the trench overflows there, the whole slope goes.

Walk to the garden shed and grab the mattock and two cedar stakes.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The intercept trench is taking water but the clay's saturated — if this keeps up the north ridge beds will slump before morning. Should've driven the deadmen deeper yesterday.

🌿 Jenny14:47

The water's already over the stakes.

Point to the dark line creeping up the wooden barrier.

💭 peek at the thought
The trench is already overflowing at the third cribbing course.

Go on. I'll cut the spillway wider.

Walk up the garden path toward the north ridge, mattock over shoulder.

💭 peek at the thought
The stakes I drove yesterday at the north ridge shade cloth anchors — water's halfway up them already. Clay doesn't drain, it just holds. Need to cut a relief channel before the weight takes the whole terrace.

🌿 Jenny14:49

Watch out for the loose shale.

Stand up slowly, rubbing my ankle, and follow him into the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
If he doesn't move fast enough, the seeds will be washed away.

🔧 Kevin14:50

Stay on the grass edge. The shale goes when it's wet.

Reach the north ridge terrace, set the mattock into the trench lip where water overtops, and start widening the channel.

💭 peek at the thought
She's limping but she's moving. Ankle's held two days now. Shale on the north ridge approach is slick when wet — lost my footing there last week. She knows the ground better than she lets on.
