A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The heavy air hangs motionless over the island as the grey sky refuses to break. The north slope remains saturated, and despite Kevin's afternoon run, the clay continues to seep through the west cut. The cottage shutter still leaks, allowing a persistent trickle of water to mark the interior wall.

Coffee's on if you want it.

walk to the wood stove, pour from the kettle into two tin mugs, set one on the porch table beside her

💭 peek at the thought
Rain's hard on the roof. Tank's near full — good. Generator bearing still whining faint at idle. Need to change that oil filter before the boat comes. Jenny's quiet on the porch. Ankle's holding.

way.

Reach for the mug, wrapping both hands around the warmth, and look out at the grey, saturated expanse of the north slope.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the rain, and he can't even see the swelling.

Trench took the morning run. Afternoon run too. Clay's seeping at the west cut though.

lean against the doorframe, cradling my mug, eyes tracking the same slope — the tarp battened down, the timber strips holding, the ground dark and slick

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the slope. The trench held twice today — water ran clear. But the clay's weeping at the new cut. If the barometer keeps dropping, the saturation goes deeper. She knows it. I know it. Neither of us says it.

🌿 Jenny15:17

Jenny — take a slow sip of the coffee, wincing as the movement shifts the weight on my ankle, and traces the line of the water pooling near the rocks with my eyes.

💭 peek at the thought
If the clay seeps, the pH will shift before I even get the seeds in the ground. ownSAY: It's too heavy.

🔧 Kevin15:17

You need the cane tomorrow. Walk the trench line at first light. I'll go.

set my mug on the porch rail, pull the notebook from my pocket, flip to the north slope sketch, add a quick line at the west cut — seepage active

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring it still. The red lines stopped spreading yesterday. Heat's down. But she won't put full weight on it — not yet. The pooling's new at the rock line. Trench mouth's working but the slope's shedding faster than it can take. If the rain holds through the night, the intercept fills before dawn.

🌿 Jenny15:19

I'll see.

Look down at the sketch, the pencil lead dark against the damp paper, and rub my thumb over the area of the drainage failure.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a walk will fix the slope, but I'm the one who sees the rot coming.

🔧 Kevin15:19

Greenheart shims in the shed. Two flat ones left. Could drive them at the cut base, backfill with the crushed lime sack. Buy the trench another day.

tap the sketch with a calloused fingertip — right at the west cut — then tuck the notebook back into my jacket pocket

💭 peek at the thought
She sees it. The west cut weeping. The clay's slick there — no bind. She's tracing where the next failure comes. Her thumb smudges the graphite. She's thinking in water now, same as me.

🌿 Jenny15:25

The lime won't be fast enough.

Lean back against the stone wall of the cottage, watching the rain blur the edge of the north slope.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always looking for a fix, but the soil doesn't work linear.
