Waiting for the Low Tide

Kevin kneels in the mud of the intercept trench, checking the tension on the temporary shoring beams. Jenny stands nearby with her notebook open, marking the pooling zones on the slope while the heavy air presses against the ridge.

The tide rises steadily, pushing the salt water toward the lower shelves of the north ridge. Kevin and Jenny continue working in the saturated mud of the intercept trench, attempting to deepen the cut before the water pressure bypasses the shoring. The heavy air remains still and hot at 26°C, making the smell of damp earth and sea beet pungent as they dig into the heavy clay layer.

🌿 Jenny18:41

The trench isn't deep enough, Kevin. The water is going to bypass the shoring entirely.

Sketch the cross-section of the clay erosion layer in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The pH is dropping too fast; if I don't stabilize that clay deposit, grandmother's seeds will just rot before they even sprout.

Agreed. Thirty centimetres deeper at the second switchback. Drive the deadmen to refusal.

grab the mattock from the trench edge and step down into the mud, starting to cut the clay floor deeper at the marked pooling zone

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The clay lens at the second switchback dips under the trench floor — water'll run beneath the shoring and blow the toe out. Need to dig another thirty centimetres and drive the deadmen deeper before the tide turns.

Watch the edge of the cut. The soil is saturated like a sponge.

Shift weight on the cane to ease the sharp throbbing in the ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If he goes any deeper, he'll hit the water table and the whole slope will slide into the sea.

🔧 Kevin18:44

I'm watching. You shouldn't be standing on that ankle in this soup.

drive the mattock into the trench floor at a shallow angle, peeling clay in controlled lifts instead of chopping, keeping the cut face clean and the spoil piled clear of the shoring beams

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the left leg hard. The ankle's holding but the swelling hasn't gone down. She shouldn't be on this slope in this muck.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny18:45

I'm fine. Just make sure that shoring doesn't blow out on us.

Lean against the whitewashed stone of the way wall and watch the way the water seeps through the trench.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the ankle, but if I don't map this pH stability now, the whole plan for the garden is a waste of time.

🔧 Kevin18:46

Shoring's not going anywhere. Deadmen are holding.

keep cutting the trench floor deeper at the second switchback, laying the clay spoil in neat ridges along the uphill side, checking the cut face for any sign of piping or seepage beneath the existing shoring toes

💭 peek at the thought
She's not fine. The cane's digging into the turf, knuckles white on the grip. But she'll bite if I push it now. Trench first. Ankle after.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny18:51

The pH is already at 5.5 here. We're losing the mineral balance with every inch.

Take a test strip from the kit and dip it into the pooling water at the bottom of the trench.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is moving too fast. If that clay starts to liquefy, the whole north ridge is going to go with the tide.

🔧 Kevin18:51

Lime the trench floor before we backfill. Half a sack per metre at the switchbacks.

pause the mattock, wipe mud from the handle, and reach for the burlap sack of crushed lime staged at the trench head, tearing it open with the crowbar's claw

💭 peek at the thought
Five-five. That's the untreated baseline. Lime beds are holding at six-eight to seven-zero but the intercept's pulling acidic runoff straight through the clay lens. Need to bed the trench floor with crushed lime before backfill or the shoring rots in a season.
