A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin attempts to dig a test pit at the northeast foundation to find the depth of the seep, but the saturated soil is too heavy and the hand trowel head snaps under the pressure, leaving the tool buried in the mud. Jenny watches from the porch, clutching the tin of seeds as her ankle throbs, and she winces when shifting her weight as the ground near the slope begins to shift.

The water tank is at capacity, Kevin. We need to reinforce the southings before the next tide comes in.

I sit at the kitchen table and begin sketching the morphology of the sea beet leaves, my pencil moving rhythmically against the paper despite the smell of damp earth.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure in the air is heavy; I can feel it in the joints of my ankle. The north ridge is a ticking clock, and if that trench doesn't hold, the whole garden goes into the sea. I need to check the pH of the soil samples again—if the acidity stays this high, grandmother's seeds will never stand a chance.

Tank's full. Overflow's running clean?

Walk to the back wall and check the rain tank overflow pipe where it exits through the stone, watching for blockage or backflow.

💭 peek at the thought
Southings. She means the south slope drainage. The intercept trench took the last tide but the shoring's bowing. If the next tide pushes the same volume with this barometer, the clay gives way. She's sketching sea beet glands while the hillside slides. Priorities.

It's clear for now. But the sediment in the basin is rising.

I look up from my sketch, tapping the pencil against my chin, as I feel the throbbing in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always looking at the pipes while the ridge is literally liquefying behind us. If the artwork clears, it doesn't change the fact that the soil is moving.

Basin's taking foundation fines. Northeast corner again.

Grab the hand trowel and bucket from the porch, head outside to the northeast foundation corner where the overflow basin sits, and start digging a test pit to see how deep the seep runs.

💭 peek at the thought
Sediment rising means the foundation's weeping worse. Clay's in suspension. That fissure under the northeast corner's feeding silt straight into the tank basin. Next heavy tide and the overflow carries foundation material. She's watching me watch the pipe. Ankle's bad — she's not moving fast if the trench goes.

🌿 Jenny20:25

Watch out for the root ball. The whole area is coming down to a slope.

I stand up slowly, wincing as my ankle shifts, and grab the tin of grandmother's seeds from the table, feeling the weight of them in my palm.

💭 peek at the thought
If the foundation is losing fines, the shoring is already failing. I should have debrided that own hours ago, but the hunger is sharper today.

🔧 Kevin20:26

You're not hauling that tin up the ridge if the slope lets go.

Kneel at the northeast corner, trowel into the saturated soil beside the foundation stones, and feel for the tamarind roots — checking if they're still anchored or sliding with the clay.

💭 peek at the thought
Root ball. She means the old tamarind root system wrapping the northeast pier. If that's shifting, the whole corner's floating on lubricated clay. She's carrying the seed tin like it's the last thing she'll save. Ankle's taking her weight wrong — she'll fold before she admits it.

🌿 Jenny20:27

I won't let them go. But we need to see how deep the water is sitting.

I walk out to the porch, leaning my weight on the good leg, and watch him dig while the wind picks up.

💭 peek at the thought
He's worried about the tin, I'm worried about the chemistry of the soil. If the roots go, the seeds are just dead weight anyway.
