Saturated Shoring

Kevin and Jenny stand over the widening trench where the steady rain continues to turn the slope into slurry. Jenny holds a heavy timber brace against the failing wall as the soil begins to slide under the pressure.

The rain continues at a steady, heavy pace, drumming against the cottage roof while the water tank finally reaches its 400-litre capacity. The ground around the cottage is a sponge, and the intercept trench on the north ridge continues to groan under the weight of the saturated soil, the shoring boards beginning to slide as the pressure rises.

On three. One — two — three.

Drive the greenheart sister plates home with the sledge, then run the 150mm stainless through-bolts through the pre-drilled holes and torque the nylocs down hard.

💭 peek at the thought
The clay's gone fluid. She's holding dead weight with a bad ankle and the wall's already decided to move. Need to get the greenheart plates driven and bolted before the next surge takes the lot.

🌿 Jenny19:47

Tighten them again, Kevin. The mud is still moving.

Jenny leans her weight against the timber brace, gritting her teeth as a sharp pain shoots through her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If those bolts don't hold, the whole ridge goes into the sea.

Checking the upslope anchors. Hold it.

Step back upslope to inspect the anchor stakes and deadman ties, testing each for movement by kicking the base and checking line tension.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The bolts bit but the clay's still creeping — plates are holding for now but the ground underneath is alive. Need to check the uphill anchor points and maybe drive the stakes deeper if the timber's shifting.

🌿 Jenny19:49

way back up! The water is at the lip!

Jenny braces her shoulder against the wood, watching the silt seep through the gap in the plates.

💭 peek at the thought
If the anchors pull, the whole trench takes the cottage with it.

🔧 Kevin19:49

Pump. Now.

Sprint to the generator shed, yank the pull cord on the trash pump, then run the discharge hose downhill past the garden wall and stake it into the grass slope.

💭 peek at the thought
Water at the lip means the trench is full and the hydrostatic pressure's about to blow the toe out. If the plates fail now the whole slope goes. Need to get the pump running and the overflow hose discharging downhill before the next wave hits.

🌿 Jenny19:51

faster! Watch the intake for silt!

Jenny shifts her weight, her ankle throbbing as she watches the water level at the trench lip.

💭 peek at the thought
if that pump doesn't clear the pressure, the ridge is lost.

🔧 Kevin19:51

Clearing the screen.

Crouch at the pump intake, pull the foot valve clear of the silt bed, shake the screen clean, then weight the hose with a rock and drive it back into the deepest part of the sump.

💭 peek at the thought
Intake's gulping slurry — if the screen clogs we lose the pump and the trench goes in minutes. Need to clear the foot valve and weight the hose deeper into the sump without losing prime.

🌿 Jenny19:53

It's dropping! Keep those plates held!

Jenny presses her full weight against the timber brace, watching the mud groan under the pressure.

💭 peek at the thought
The flow is finally slowing, but the wall is still weeping.

🔧 Kevin19:53

Braces set. Holding with you.

Shoulder in beside Jenny against the timber brace, driving boots into the mud for purchase, spreading the load across both shoulders.

💭 peek at the thought
Water's dropping — pump's winning. Plates are groaning but holding. The brace is the only thing keeping the greenheart from bowing out while the clay settles. Can't leave her there alone with that ankle.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:55

Don't let go. The pressure is still pushing.

Jenny leans her forehead against the rough wood, breathing through her nose as she watches the water line recede.

💭 peek at the thought
If he slips, the whole thing collapses and the seeds go under.
