Shelter from the rain
Kevin heads back inside as the rain intensifies, finding Jenny in the kitchen where the smell of damp earth and salt air fills the small room.
No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.
Trench shoring bowed another three mill. Greenheart's holding but the clay behind it's turning to soup. East shutter pin's gone — threads stripped clean on the spare. Need to weld a new one before the tide turns.
Walk to the wood stove, set the kettle on to boil, pull the welding mask and rods from the shelf by the radio.

Check the sediment in the tank first. The water is coming grey from the runoff.
sit at the kitchen table, unwrap the sea beet poultice, and sketch the failure point of the north ridge trench in the notebook.

Grey?
Cross to the tank, unscrew the inspection hatch, dip the torch beam into the water, watch the silt cloud rise from the bottom.

The soil is saturated, Kevin. If the trench fails, the whole intake will be choked by morning.
stand up slowly, wincing at the ankle, and walk to the porch to watch the clouds thicken over the ridge.

Tank's got a finger of silt at the bottom. Not bad yet. But the intake pipe's buried in that trench — if the shoring lets go, the pipe shears and we're done.
Screw the hatch back down, grab the hand pump and length of hose from the porch corner, head out the door toward the north ridge.

The ground is too soft! The greenheart won't hold another hour!
grab the notebook and the pencil, following him toward the ridge while keeping a weight off my left foot.
