← Day 759

the keeper's cottage · day 759 · morning

The storm breaks

The rain has turned into a torrential downpour and the wind is rattling the shutters. Kevin and Jenny retreat inside as the first crack of thunder echoes over the island.

The air in the cottage is heavy with the smell of damp wool and wood smoke. Outside, the overcast sky has finally broken, and the first heavy lashing of rain is drumming against the tin roof. Jenny sits by the stove, her leg elevated on a chair, watching the window as the storm begins to blur the world into a grey, salt-streaked smudge.

🌿 Jenny20:53

Close the door tight, Kevin. The latch is loose.

Lean back against the stove, elevating my swollen ankle on a chair, and watch the rain blur the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
The roof is going to hold, but the rain tank will overflow if this doesn't stop soon.

🔧 Kevin20:53

Got it.

lift the door by the handle, pull it shut hard, drop the latch home with the heel of my hand

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's shifted. Door frame's swollen from the wet — latch won't catch unless I lift it.

🌿 Jenny20:55

Put the kettle on. I'm freezing to the bone.

Reach for the tin of seeds on the table, tracing the dents in the metal with my thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
He's shaking too. I can see it in the way he's gripping the doorframe.

🔧 Kevin20:55

Kevin — fill the kettle from the tap, set it on the wood stove, throw in two splits of dry firewood and shut the damper halfway

💭 peek at the thought
She's cold through. Kettle's on the stove, water in the tank. Simple enough.

🌿 Jenny20:57

The barometer is dropping again. This storm is staying through.

Unwrap the poultice from my ankle and hiss as the cold air hits the raw skin.

💭 peek at the thought
The fire will catch eventually, but the damp is already in my marrow.

🔧 Kevin20:57

Looks like it.

glance at the barometer on the shelf, then pull the spare blanket from the bedroom and drape it over her shoulders

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the needle same as me. 977 and falling. This isn't blowing over by morning.

🌿 Jenny20:59

I need to check the ankle. It feels hot again.

Pull the blanket tighter around my chest and win at the throbbing heat in my leg.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to help, but a blanket won't stop the rot in the stones.

🔧 Kevin20:59

Let me see.

crouch beside her chair, peel back the gauze carefully, check the wound edges for spreading redness or streaks

💭 peek at the thought
Heat means infection's moving. Antibiotics are done. Only poultice and rest left.

🌿 Jenny21:01

It's pulsing. The salt air is getting into everything.

Pull away when he touches the swollen skin, my breath catching in my throat.

💭 peek at the thought
His hands are too gentle, it makes me want to scream or just go quiet.

🔧 Kevin21:01

It's tracking.

wet a clean cloth with the cooled boiled water, wipe the wound gentle, spread fresh sea beet paste thick over the raw meat, wrap it tight with the last clean gauze

💭 peek at the thought
Red streaks tracking up the calf. Lymphangitis. She needs IV antibiotics, not sea beet and hope. The boat's five days out if it comes at all.
