← Day 76

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the garden

Midday Frustrations

Kevin is at the dock and Jenny is in the garden.

Kevin works on the Yanmar's fuel system, using the primer lever to clear airlocks while the tide recedes. Jenny returns from the garden to secure the stone-lined path before heading to the cottage to document the gathered succulents.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You stand by the dinghy, looking at the waterline. The sun is high and the air is deceptively still.

🔧 Kevin07:42

Kevin — lean against the dock piling, arms crossed, watching the water rise and fall against the rotten planks, timing the surge intervals

💭 peek at the thought
The water's too high on the dock planks. Tide's still pushing. If I step the mast now with the dinghy surging against the jetty, I'll crack the new step before we even leave the dock. Need to wait for slack — or at least the turn.

🔧 Kevin07:44

Kevin — walk back toward the cottage, wiping grease from fingers onto a rag, heading for the engine compartment

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's turned. Water's dropping now — slow, but steady. Dinghy's settling lower against the fenders. Another hour and I'll have enough clearance to step the mast without the hull pounding the jetty. Should use the time to finish the fuel bleed on the Yanmar. Air lock's still there, mocking me.

🔧 Kevin07:48

Kevin — set a clean glass jar under the fuel filter bleed screw, crack it open, and lift the primer lever slow and steady, watching for clear fuel

💭 peek at the thought
Fuel primer's still spongy. Cracked the injector lines, pumped until my shoulder ached — nothing but bubbles. The lift pump diaphragm's probably gone soft. Or the check valve seat's worn. Either way, I'm not getting diesel to the injectors with this pump. Might have to gravity-feed from a raised jug just to prove the engine runs, then decide if I tear the pump down or wait for spares.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the garden

You are standing by the seaward garden wall. You notice a few loose stones shifting in the soil.

🌿 Jenny07:42

Jenny — kneel down and push the loose stones back into place, packing the soil tight around them.

💭 peek at the thought
The wall is settling. If the stones shift now, the salt wind will just carve right through the beds.

🌿 Jenny07:46

Jenny — walk back to the cottage and head toward the table where the succulent specimens are wrapped.

💭 peek at the thought
My knees are screaming. I need to get these succulents documented before the light shifts or the wind picks up.

🌿 Jenny07:50

Jenny — make sketch: Succulent specimens from North Cliffs

💭 peek at the thought
The morphology is fascinating—thick cuticles, clear salt-secreting glands. I need to capture the exact curve of the leaf before they wilt.
