Clearing the Path

Kevin and Jenny stand before a fallen spruce that has blocked the walkway to the garden. The grey air is heavy and still, and the soil remains too sodden for heavy work.

Kevin cleared the fallen spruce from the garden gate by limbing and bucking it into rounds, propping the trunk with offcuts to protect the wall. Jenny inspected the water tank and found it full at 400 litres with no new leaks. The garden wall remains unstable on soft soil.

Block's the main path. Can limb it from the garden side, haul brush out the gap. Wood's good for the stove if we split it before it rots.

walk to the garden gate and assess the spruce — trunk diameter, limb spread, which limbs pin it to the wall

💭 peek at the thought
Tree's across the path at the garden gate. Ground's too wet to bring the chainsaw in clean — ruts will hold water all season. Need to clear it by hand or wait for a dry spell that isn't coming.

🌿 Jenny21:43

The soil is too soft to anchor, Kevin. If we pull it now, we'll just tear the roots into the drainage. Wait for the boat.

Lean against the stone garden wall, shifting weight off the swollen ankle, and sketch the way the spruce is crushing the sea way.

💭 peek at the thought
He's talking about firewood while the garden is literally drowning and my ankle feels like it's on fire.

🔧 Kevin21:47

Won't pull. Just limb and buck where it lies. Clear the gate opening. Rest stays until the soil firms.

pull the bow saw from the shed and start cutting the lower limbs on the garden side, working toward the trunk

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Ground's soup. Winching it now rips the drainage we just dug. But the supply boat's four days out and the path's blocked. Need the garden access for the ridge work.

🌿 Jenny21:47

way don't shift the weight on the wall. The mortar is already crumbling.

way on the low bench, rubbing the swollen ankle, and watch the about flying in the salt-heavy air.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks if he clears the path, the problem goes away.

🔧 Kevin21:48

Right. Prop the trunk before I take the weight off the wall.

grab two spruce offcuts from the pile by the path and wedge them between the trunk and the garden bed, tight enough to hold the weight off the wall

💭 peek at the thought
Wall's old lime mortar. Spruce trunk's leaning on it — heavy. If I cut the limbs holding it off the stones, the full weight settles and the wall goes. Need to prop it first.

🌿 Jenny21:49

It won't hold if the rain keeps. The soil is turning to soup.

stand up slowly, wincing as the ankle throbs, and walk toward the cottage to check the water tank.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so proud of those wedges, but the earth is still shifting under them.

🔧 Kevin21:50

Wall first. Tree second.

finish limbing the trunk on the garden side, then cut the trunk into manageable rounds where it lies, leaving the props in place until the wall's shored

💭 peek at the thought
Props are temporary. Rain's not stopping. Barometer's 978 and steady — not dropping fast, but not rising either. Wall's the priority. If it goes, the garden terrace slides.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:51

Just watch the garden stones. If that wall goes, the whole patch goes with it.

walk to the cottage, hand pressed against the swollen ankle, and look at the water level in the tank.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving too fast. The ground is too unstable for that weight.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:52

Clearing the gate first. Then the wall.

saw through the trunk in three sections, roll the rounds clear of the gate opening, and stack them on the path for splitting later

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The wall's the spine of the garden. Lose it and the terrace slides into the slope. Props hold for now. Cut the trunk, clear the gate, then shore the wall proper with stone and lime before the next tide cycle.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:53

The soil is too soft for that weight, Kevin. Be careful with the stones.

lean against the cool metal of the tank, watching him work in the garden, feeling the sharp throb in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks clearing the path makes it the priority, but the water is still backing up.
