The Before Before Drop

Kevin and Jenny sit at the table with the heirloom seed tin and the open notebook. Outside, the air is heavy and still as the barometer needle ticks downward toward 981 hPa.

Kevin finished the letter to Tom and sealed it in the dry bag. He ran the Yanmar under load in the dinghy and confirmed the vibration fix held. Jenny checked the garden tarp corners and re-staked one that had lifted, then tested the north-slope soil pH and found it still acidic.

🌿 Jenny01:45

Jenny — trace the rusted rim of the tin with my thumb, feeling the cold metal.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at the map like it's a puzzle he can solve instead of a living system.stunSAY: The pressure is dropping fast, Kevin. We need to move the seeds inside before the wind shifts.

Lid's warped. Salt got in the threads.

Pour coffee into the second mug, set it down without clatter, and sit opposite her with the notebook open to the seed inventory page.

💭 peek at the thought
She's memorizing it. The tin, the weight, the way the lid catches. Like she's learning a part by heart before the test.

🌿 Jenny01:47

I know. I cleaned the threads with the file, but it's not holding.

Pull the tin closer to my chest, shielding it from the steam of the coffee.

💭 peek at the thought
If the salt gets in, the moisture follows, and then they're gone before they ever hit the dirt.

🔧 Kevin01:47

The file won't fix threads that aren't there.

Reach across the table, calloused fingers tapping the tin's side — a question, not a grab.

💭 peek at the thought
She's protecting it from me. Or protecting me from it. Can't tell which.

🌿 Jenny01:49

Then I'll find a sealant. Or a better container.

Tighten my grip on the tin, the metal cold against my palm.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks everything can be fixed with enough force or the right tool. Some things just erode.

🔧 Kevin01:49

There's a plastic drum in the generator shed. Blue one. Clean. Snap lid with a gasket.

Slide the mug closer to her, steam curling between us, and wait.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not letting go. And I'm not making her.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:51

I'll check the shed. If it's cracked, it won't matter.

Stand up slowly, wincing as the weight hits my ankle, and head for the door.

💭 peek at the thought
A drum is better than this warped tin, but it's still a gamble.

🔧 Kevin01:51

Take the cane. Leaning by the porch post.

Stay seated, pen tapping once against the notebook's edge — inventory page still open, tin's shadow long across the paper.

💭 peek at the thought
She thinks I don't see the wince. Thinks I won't count the steps.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:53

I'll be back before the rain starts.

Grab the wooden cane from the wall and step out onto the porch, the damp air hitting my face.

💭 peek at the thought
The air is too heavy to breathe today. I need to see that drum for myself.

🔧 Kevin01:53

Kevin — stand, pull the oilskin from the hook, and follow her onto the porch — not close, not far, just there.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's dropped four millibars since she stood up. She won't make it back dry.
