Pre-Rain Humidity

Kevin and Jenny sit on the porch steps watching the heavy clouds thicken over the north ridge. Jenny keeps her elevated ankle on a crate of supplies while Kevin checks the barometer for a drop in pressure.

Kevin returns from the generator shed to find the door latch secured with stainless wire, though the wood is still splitting under the tension. He moves to the south edge of the garden to check the stakes, finding the wind is beginning to tug at the tarp. Jenny remains at the cottage, focused on her sketches of the darkening clouds gathering over the ridge as the pressure continues to drop.

🌿 Jenny04:25

The pressure is dropping too fast. It's going to pour before noon.

Open notebook and sketch the cloud formations over the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
If the rain comes before the boat arrives, I won't be able to clear the dock, and the salt will just rot the wood faster.

Barometer's at 991 and falling. You're not wrong.

stand, walk to the garden, check tarp tension on the tomato rows, pull loose corners tight and stake them down

💭 peek at the thought
She's reading the sky better than the barometer. Northeast bank building like that with the pressure falling — we've got two hours, maybe three before the ridge catches it. Should've battened the garden tarp tighter yesterday.

Check the south-side stakes too; the wind will catch them if they're loose.

Reach for my ankle and adjust the gauze, wincing at the throbbing movement.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always moving, fixing things while I'm just trying to keep my leg from rotting.

South side first. Then the generator shed door — latch blew open last blow.

walk to south garden edge, test each stake, hammer loose ones deeper, re-tension tarp lines

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the south stakes — wind wraps around the cottage and hits the garden from behind. Her ankle's swelling again despite the antibiotics. She won't say it, but the infection's tracking.

🌿 Jenny04:29

Use the wire for the latch if the wood is splitting.

Pick up my pencil and sketch the way the light is turning over the tide pools.

💭 peek at the thought
If the shed door goes, the tools will be ruined by the salt spray before the boat even arrives.

🔧 Kevin04:30

Wire's in the shed. Back in a minute.

walk to generator shed, check door latch, reinforce with stainless wire if wood's splitting, then return to south garden stakes

💭 peek at the thought
Wire's better than nails for split wood — won't work loose when the frame flexes. She's sketching light on tide pools instead of the clouds. Means she's watching the water, not the sky. Smart.
