← Day 767

the keeper's cottage · day 767 · night

The storm breaks

The rain turns into a torrential downpour, lashing the cottage. The wind groans through the spruce trees, and the barometer continues its steady descent.

Kevin and Jenny stay inside the cottage as the air grows heavy and the pressure continues to drop. They monitor the barometer and prepare the generator while waiting for the wind to pick up further. The northeast corner of the cottage window seeps despite their previous sealing efforts.

Kevin — walk to the porch and check the dinghy mooring lines through the rain

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's at 984 and still dropping. Wind's northeast and rising. This isn't the tail end of the last system — it's something new piling on. Dock took a beating Tuesday; the sistered knee held but the tell-tales on the south piling showed movement. If this hits spring tide tonight, the surge will test every repair we made. Jenny's on the north ridge in this. She knows the slope, but the ankle slows her. Radio's charged. Generator's full. Dinghy's double-lashed. We're as ready as we'll be.

way inside, Kevin! The wind is turning harder than predicted!

stand up and move to the window to check the barometer one last time.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if that tide rises any higher, the dinghy will be pinned against the rocks.

Generator's running. Radio's charged. Dinghy's double-lashed at the bow and stern springs. East tank epoxy held at high tide.

pull the porch door shut against the gust and latch it, then check the generator exhaust through the kitchen window

💭 peek at the thought
She's back. Good. The wind's shifted — was northeast, now more east-northeast. That puts the fetch straight down the channel at the dock. Barometer's 984 and the needle hasn't slowed. She's favouring the left leg still. The cane's by the door where she left it. Dinghy lines are doubled but the mooring ring's only held by oak wedges and epoxy in splintered mortise. If the surge hits spring high with this wind, the load comes sudden.

Keep an eye on the fuel level; I'm checking the seals on the kitchen windows.

walk to the table and start a quick sketch of the pressure drop in the log.

💭 peek at the thought
If the generator holds, we have light for the charts, but that wind sounds like it wants the roof off.

Half tank. Drum in the shed's clean. I'll cycle the genny — two hours on, one off — stretch it. Kitchen window northeast corner weeps at this wind angle. Got silicone and lead flashing staged on the porch if it starts running.

check the generator fuel gauge and note the hour meter reading

💭 peek at the thought
She's logging the pressure drop. Smart — gives us a timeline if the radio fails and we need to estimate the low point. Generator's at half tank, burns maybe two litres an hour under load. That's sixty hours if we run continuous. Less if we cycle it. Fuel drum's filtered and clean in the shed. She's sketching fast, pencil moving. The ankle's holding her weight but the swelling's visible above the brace. Window seals on the kitchen side took a beating last storm — the northeast corner leaks when the wind hits this angle.

🌿 Jenny07:09

I'll keep the radio on the emergency frequency just in case the wind gets away with the mast.

pick up the notebook and record the way reading of 982 hPa.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being cautious with the fuel, but the wind is the real thing to watch right now.
