The Heavy Air

Kevin and Jenny stand by the porch railing watching the grey mist roll over the garden. The air is stagnant and the barometer hangs at 982 hPa.

The air is heavy and still, thick with the humidity of the wet season. The barometer continues its slow descent, now 983 hPa, signaling a coming change in the weather. The tide is high, lapping rhythmically against the reinforced dock pilings and the salt-crusted south beach debris.

🌿 Jenny07:15

The wind is turning north. We need to get the tarp over the garden beds now.

Steps off the porch to grab the heavy-duty tarp and the stakes.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast. If the rain hits hard tonight, those seeds will be washed into the sea before they even root.

Spare roll's in the shed. I'll grab stakes and the mallet.

walk to the garden shed and retrieve the spare heavy-duty tarp roll, timber stakes, and mallet

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — north wind means salt spray on the beds, and the tomatoes are just setting fruit. The heavy canvas is still battened on the cottage roof; the spare roll's in the shed. I'll get it.

way. I'll start clearing the brush from the garden wall—we need to weight the edges down before it picks up.

Moves to the garden wall and begins pulling heavy weeds from the south rows.

💭 peek at the thought
If he doesn't get back with the stakes soon, the first gust will tear the plastic away. I can't lose grandmother's seeds twice.

I'll run the windward edge. You take the lee.

unroll the tarp along the north garden wall, drive stakes into the windward edge at one-metre intervals, pull taut and batten with timber strips

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving stiff. The ankle's worse than she said. I'll stake the windward side first so she doesn't have to crouch on the wet stone.

🌿 Jenny07:19

I'm grabbing the heavy stones for the corners. The soil is too loose.

Kneels in the mud and starts shoveling flat rocks around the edge of the tarp.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is already picking up. If I don't secure the south side, the whole thing will lift like a sail.

🔧 Kevin07:19

Got the corners. You drive the mid-stakes.

pick up four heavy cribbing stones from the pile by the shed and set them on the tarp corners, then drive the remaining mid-stakes along the leeward edge

💭 peek at the thought
She shouldn't be kneeling. Not with that ankle. But she won't stop if I say it. I'll weight the corners myself and let her think it was the plan all along.

🌿 Jenny07:21

I'mion the stakes in. The ground is turning to mush.

Takes the mallet and begins driving the timber stakes into the earth along the garden wall.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is shifting. It's getting heavy. If I don't get this down before the rain starts, the whole project is gone.

🔧 Kevin07:21

Swap. You tie the guys. I'll drive.

take the mallet from Jenny, drive the remaining stakes along the leeward edge, then secure the guy lines to the corner stones

💭 peek at the thought
The mallet's heavy for a bad ankle. She's favouring the left leg, driving stakes one-handed. I'll take the mallet and finish the row — she can tie off the guys.
