The Calm Before the Rain

The grey sky deepens, and the first heavy drops of rain hit the hot dust. The high tide begins its slow turn to ebb as the barometer continues its steady fall.

Kevin went to the water tank to check the overflow valve as the tide fell. He managed to clear some grime from the stem and worked it back and forth to loosen the binding. Jenny headed out to the porch to sketch the north ridge succulents before the light failed.

Rain's here. Going to the east tank while the tide's still high.

Walk to the east tank at the back of the cottage, flashlight in hand, to inspect the epoxy repair at high water.

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer dropping, rain starting — east tank epoxy won't hold another deluge. Need to check it at high slack before the runoff hits.

Check the overflow valve while you're there.

stand up slowly, wincing at my ankle, and walk to the kitchen to retrieve the heirloom seed tin from the counter.

💭 peek at the thought
If the rain stays like this, the soil on the ridge will turn before I can even Test the pH.

Aye.

Crouch at the tank base, wipe grime off the overflow valve stem, work it back and forth by hand to feel for binding.

💭 peek at the thought
Overflow valve's been sticky since the last storm. She's right — if it seizes shut, the tank splits.

Don't force it, it might just be salt buildup.

tuck the seed tin under my arm and head out to the porch to sketch the morphology of the north ridge succulents before the light fails completely.

💭 peek at the thought
If that valve is seized, we'll lose the whole tank before the supply boat even shows up.
