The Thickening Clouds

Kevin and Jenny stand by the weeping wall as the first heavy drops of rain hit the dust.

The heavy rain from the west arrives early, turning the garden soil into a thick slurry. Kevin and Jenny attempt to continue their tasks, but the deluge makes outdoor construction work nearly impossible. The tide rises steadily, threatening the lower paths near the dock.

Trench held last time. But the saturation's deeper now.

walk to the north ridge drainage bed to check the tarp and cribbing

💭 peek at the thought
The clay's already saturated past the first metre. This rain's just going to turn the trench into a soup. Should've had the shoring in three days ago.

🌿 Jenny15:09

The clay is too heavy. It won't hold a footprint, Kevin.

wipe a smudge of charcoal from the notebook and pocket the seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
If that slope goes, the *Cananga* seeds will rot before they even take root. The island is hungry today.

Then we don't walk it. We work from the boards.

fetch the two greenheart sister plates and the 150mm stainless through-bolt from under the eaves

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The stuff moves like wet cement. Any weight on it now and we lose the face.

🌿 Jenny15:11

If the plates shift, the bolts will just tear the wood with them.

lean against the cottage wall and watch the wind flatten the weeds.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always looking for a mechanical fix with hardware, but the earth is moving, not the wood.

🔧 Kevin15:12

Washers under the heads. And cedar shims between plate and clay — spreads the point load.

grab the cedar shims from the garden shed and the flat washers from the workshop bench

💭 peek at the thought
She's seen the plates shift before. The wood's too soft when it's this wet. Need to spread the load.

🌿 Jenny15:13

It's a temporary fix. The rain is going to warp those shimmers anyway.

sketch the weight distribution on the plate in the notebook before the rain ruins the page.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the pressure, but the wood will still rot from the moisture in that clay.
