The Arrival of Rain

Kevin and Jenny stand under the porch overhang as the first heavy drops finally hit the saturated soil. The wind picks up from the north, whipping the edges of the shade cloth over the tomato rows.

Kevin and Jenny stabilized the north garden wall by removing the shifting third course, clearing the choked French drain outlet, and backfilling with clean beach stone. The wall held and water began draining freely again.

🌿 Jenny18:15

The auger is useless today, Kevin. We're losing the garden wall.

grab the heavy-duty twine and the mallet from the bench.

💭 peek at the thought
The soil is going to liquefy if I don't get those stakes down; the north ridge is already slipping.

🔧 Kevin18:16

Wall first. Cloth second. Drain can wait.

walk to the garden wall north end with the crowbar and hammer, test the stone courses for movement, then drive two oak stakes at the windward corners to brace the shade cloth before the wind tears it free

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The clay's soup already. That wall won't hold another tide without the deadmen set, and I can't drive stakes in this muck. But the twine and mallet won't fix the foundation — they're for the cloth. She's thinking ahead. I'm still stuck on the drain.

🌿 Jenny18:17

I'll hold the tension while you check the stones.

step into the mud and grab the corner of the shade cloth.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, but if that wall goes, the seeds go with it.

🔧 Kevin18:18

Call it. Which stones move?

brace the shade cloth corner she's holding with a timber batten and two stakes, driving them deep at an angle while she keeps tension, then probe the wall footing with the crowbar to find the loose courses

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She takes the load, I check the bones. The north end's been weeping for weeks — clay saturated, mortar gone soft. If the footing's shifted, no amount of twine saves it. But the cloth catches wind like a sail; one gust and it rips the stakes clean. We do this together or not at all.

🌿 Jenny18:19

The third course from the left. It's shifting toward the drainage line.

lean weight against the wall to Feel the vibration.

💭 peek at the thought
The clay is moving like water; if I don't find the bedrock, the whole thing slides.

🔧 Kevin18:20

Trench isn't taking it fast enough. Need the drain stone now.

pull the loose stones from the third course, set them aside, then dig out the saturated clay behind the gap with the hand shovel to expose the French drain outlet — check if it's blocked or just overwhelmed

💭 peek at the thought
Third course. That's the one I chalked last week — the undermining point where the intercept trench should've caught the water. Clay's weeping faster than the trench drains. She feels it moving under her palm. Smart. She's reading the structure like she reads the plants. The wall's telling us where it fails.

🌿 Jenny18:21

The outlet's choked. I'll clear it with the sieve.

grab the hand sieve from the shed and wade into the trench behind the wall.

💭 peek at the thought
The drain's clogged with fine silt again; it's not overwhelmed, it's suffocating.

🔧 Kevin18:22

Watch the ankle. Deep water cuts.

haul two buckets of beach stone from the pile by the dock, dump them at the wall base, then start backfilling the drain outlet with clean stone as she clears the silt — coarse first, then fines to bridge

💭 peek at the thought
She's already in the trench. Water's up to her boots. The sieve'll catch the silt but not the roots — bindweed and couch grass choke these drains every winter. I should be the one in the muck. She's got the ankle. But she won't let me say it, and saying it wastes time. The wall breathes when she pulls the blockage. Stone first, then backfill, then the deadmen. Rain's coming harder.
