The Saturated Trench

Kevin and Jenny stand over the backfilled French drain as the air hangs heavy with humidity. Jenny probes the soil with a hand auger while Kevin checks the alignment of the new wall stones.

The morning air is thick and humid, the wet season weight pressing down on the garden. The north end of the garden wall is weeping, with the French drain struggling to keep up with the saturated soil. Kevin and Jenny are testing the depth of the clay to see if the drainage system is simply blocked by the heavy clay pan.

🌿 Jenny19:13

It's still too saturated, Kevin. The drainage isn't reaching the ridge yet.

Jenny presses the auger deeper into the mud, wincing as the movement stings through her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The soil is too soft here; if I dig now, the water will just collapse the trench before the first seed even sets.

Auger's hitting clay at what, eighteen inches?

walk to the north end of the garden wall and scrape back the backfill with the mattock to expose the French drain outlet

💭 peek at the thought
The soil's still holding water above the clay. French drain's only taking the top foot. Need to go deeper or cut a lateral across the slope face.

🌿 Jenny19:15

Nineteen, maybe—but it's holding the water right up against the stones.

Jenny leans her weight onto the auger, watching the metal tip sink into the grey

💭 peek at the thought
Eighteen inches of pure, heavy clay; the whole island is acting like a sponge.

🔧 Kevin19:15

Clay pan's the ceiling. Drain's sitting on top of it.

drive the mattock into the trench bottom beside the drain pipe, testing the clay depth

💭 peek at the thought
Water's perching on the clay pan. The drain needs to punch through or run along it. Either way, more digging.

🌿 Jenny19:17

Then we have to dig deeper. We can't just let the garden become a pond.

Jenny pulls the auger from the mud and stares at the slick, grey surface of the bit.

💭 peek at the thought
If we don't break through that pan, the seeds will just rot in the salt water.

🔧 Kevin19:17

How thick's the clay?

lever the mattock blade under the clay edge to see if it peels or holds

💭 peek at the thought
Deeper means through the clay or along it. Through's faster if the layer's thin. Along means a lateral trench the length of the wall. Either way it's mattock work in wet muck.

🌿 Jenny19:19

way more. If we don't cut through it, the water is going nowhere.

Jenny kneels in the mud, poking the edge of the clay with her thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
It's thick enough to drown the whole garden; I can feel the island resisting.

🔧 Kevin19:19

Lateral along the clay top to the slope break. Less digging.

walk the wall line north, eyeing the ground for the natural fall line where water wants to run

💭 peek at the thought
Thick clay. Cutting through's a day's work minimum. Running a lateral along the top of it to the slope break might be faster — follow the contour to where the ground falls away naturally.
