← Day 778

Apart — Kevin at the dock, Jenny at the garden

Midday work split

Kevin is at the dock preparing the Yanmar for a load test; Jenny is at the garden wrestling with the auger and root bypass.

Kevin stands by the dock, watching the Yanmar settle into a steady idle, the vibration-free run confirming his repairs. In the garden, Jenny leans her full weight against the drill, but the 12mm bit merely screams against the stubborn root without biting any deeper. The sky thickens, the air heavy with the scent of coming wet season rain.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the dock

You stand at the dinghy transom, tool roll open on the gunwale. The Yanmar sits mounted, fuel line bled, new filter seated. You'll run it up to cruising RPM with the prop engaged — the real test of the sleeve and bracket alignment. The water is slack at low tide, plenty of room to maneuver. You grip the starter handle, thumb on the decompression lever.

🔧 Kevin19:29

Kevin — pull decompression lever, crank starter hard, release lever at compression stroke, feather throttle to warm idle, let oil pressure build, engage forward gear, advance throttle to cruising RPM, hold steady, feel for vibration through transom

💭 peek at the thought
This is the moment. Everything comes down to the next few minutes — the bronze sleeve, the bracket alignment, the prop shaft true. If she vibrates at load, it's back to the drawing board. If she runs clean, the dinghy's a real boat again. Not just a hull tied to a rotting dock.

🔧 Kevin19:32

There she is.

ease throttle back to idle, let engine settle, shift to neutral, kill switch, wipe hands on rag, glance at fuel filter housing — dry, check prop shaft seal — no weep, sit back on gunwale and breathe

💭 peek at the thought
She held. Clean at cruising RPM — no shudder through the transom, no harmonic buzz in the tiller. The bronze sleeve and bracket alignment held true under load. Only a faint roughness at the very top end, barely perceptible, like a single injector whispering. Good enough. Better than good enough. The dinghy's a boat again.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the garden

You crouch at the west garden wall corner where the soil auger bit seized on a root at depth, its shaft twisted and handle bent, stuck fast in the ground. The trench you dug ends a meter short, blocked by the same root system. You have the mattock, a spare 12mm auger bit from the workshop, and the come-along if the bit won't turn free. The clay sucks at your boots.

🌿 Jenny19:31

Come on, you stubborn thing.

Unscrew the twisted auger bit from its seized shaft and thread the spare 12mm bit onto the drill.

💭 peek at the thought
The root runs right through my planned trench line. Lucky it's parallel to the wall - means I can work around it rather than through it. That 12mm bit might be too small for this diameter root, but it's worth a try before bringing out the come-along. The clay's sucking at my boots like it's trying to hold me here forever.

🌿 Jenny19:35

damn it, just give an inch.

Press the drill hard against the root, trying to see if the 12mm bit catches any purchase.

💭 peek at the thought
The bit didn't even bite. This wood is like ironwood. If I can't get a pilot hole, I'll have to use the mattock to pry it out, but my ankle is already killing me.
