The Clay Pan Problem

The tide continues to fall, exposing more of the muddy shoreline while Kevin and Jenny debate whether to dig deeper or reroute the drainage toward the north ridge slope.

Kevin staged beach stones at the garden wall base while Jenny began digging the drainage trench, but her shovel struck a buried root that halted progress. The clay interface held firm under the new stone loads.

🔧 Kevin19:20

Clay shelf's too deep. We're not digging through it. Reroute the drain along the wall base to the north ridge saddle — natural fall, gets us past the pan.

walk to the north end of the garden wall, scrape away surface soil with the mattock to expose the clay interface, mark the fall line toward the ridge with the chalk

💭 peek at the thought
The clay pan runs deeper than the French drain's footing. Digging deeper just hits the same impermeable layer — we'd be excavating a sump, not a drain. The slope toward the north ridge has natural fall; reroute there.

🌿 Jenny19:21

The ridge saddle is stable, but we'll have to carry the stone up the slope by hand.

wipe sweat from my eyes with a muddy forearm and kneel to sketch the contour of the new drainage path in the dirt.

💭 peek at the thought
If we reroute to the ridge, I lose the easy access to the garden, but this wall is just roting the roots anyway.

🔧 Kevin19:23

We'll stage stone at the base tonight. Move it in relays tomorrow before the heat. Two buckets per trip, switch off.

crouch beside her, study the dirt sketch, tap the mattock handle against the toe of my boot to knock off clods

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the carry. Every stone, every bucket of backfill — uphill on a wet slope. But the alternative is a garden that keeps washing out. She's already sketching it. She's committed.

🌿 Jenny19:23

I'll handle the heavy lifting, you just keep the line straight while I dig the trench.

stand up slowly, wincing as the joint flares, and head toward the cottage to grab the shovel.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being too optimistic about my ankle, but the seeds won't survive another week of flooding.

🔧 Kevin19:24

You hold the grade. I'll move the stone.

turn toward the beach stone pile at the dock path, start walking to stage the first loads at the wall base

💭 peek at the thought
She's not lifting heavy. Not with that ankle. Not today. I'll carry the stone. She holds the line.

🌿 Jenny19:25

Don't overexert yourself, the path is slick. I'll start the trench.

grab the shovel from the porch, return to the garden wall, and begin digging the weeds away from the drainage line.

💭 peek at the thought
If he starts the stone now, I can clear the topsoil before the rain turns this to soup.

🔧 Kevin19:26

—

walk down the garden path toward the dock, boots finding the drier edges, grab two beach stones from the pile by the mooring ring, hoist them, turn back uphill

💭 peek at the thought
She's clearing the line. Good. Let her set the grade while I bring the heavy. The path's slick but I know every foot of it — carried engine blocks wetter than this.

🌿 Jenny19:27

Watch your step, the slope is loose near the wall.

dig the shovel into the stubborn earth, clearing a foot of greyish soil to reveal the clay beneath.

💭 peek at the thought
He's moving faster than he should. If he trips on those rocks, I'm not carrying him back.
