The Tide Rises

Kevin and Jenny stand under the porch overhang as the storm turns to a deluge. The tide is now over the limestone shelf, and the chick's fate is uncertain.

The rain continues to drum against the cottage roof, a relentless rhythmic pounding that masks the sound of the rising surf. The tide has surged past the predicted marks, swallowing the lower garden shelves in a layer of grey salt water and foam. Kevin and Jenny stand huddled under the narrow overhang of the porch, watching the water reclaim the path they've worked so hard to clear.

🌿 Jenny00:31

The water is moving too fast. We can't go back out there.

Lean heavily against the stone wall of the way, watching the waves break over the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
If that tide rises any faster, the chick is gone. I can't lose another living thing to this island today.

🔧 Kevin00:32

Aye. It's taken.

turn from the porch rail and step back under the overhang, wiping rain from my face with a sleeve

💭 peek at the thought
The tide's already taken the shelf. Chick's gone — no way it held on against that surge with parents circling useless. She's right. We don't move on this.

🌿 Jenny00:33

It wasn't supposed to be that simple.

Reach into my pocket and grip the cold metal of the seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
He says it so easily, like it's just another entry in a ledger.

🔧 Kevin00:34

No. It wasn't.

stand still under the overhang, rain hammering the roof, not pulling away from her hand on my pocket

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the chick. The tin's been in my pocket three days — since the crate. She felt it when I came up the porch steps. Or she knew before.

🌿 Jenny00:35

I need to find soil that will work. Not just any soil. The right soil.

Open the seed tin and pull out a few seeds, holding them between thumb and forefinger.

💭 peek at the thought
How do I tell him I've been measuring every square inch of this island, looking for soil that will hold his grandmother's seeds without killing them?

🔧 Kevin00:36

The north ridge beds. Lime-treated. pH six-eight to seven. We tested.

glance at the seeds in her fingers, then at her face, water streaming off the porch roof onto my boots

💭 peek at the thought
She's holding seeds from tin E like they're the last ones on earth. Maybe they are, for her. The tin was sealed, rusted through at the sides — she shouldn't have been able to open it without me. But her fingers found the seam I couldn't.

🌿 Jenny00:37

The ridge is stable for now, but the salt is burying the lower shelves.

Look down at the seeds, small and fragile against the grey light of the storm.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the pH, but the rain is changing the chemistry. The earth is shifting under us.

🔧 Kevin00:38

The upper terrace. Above the third cairn. Clay cap holds, salt doesn't reach it.

reach into my jacket, pull out the waterproof notebook, flip to the ridge layout sketch with the three cairns marked, hold it out to her under the porch roof

💭 peek at the thought
She's seen the transect data. The Carex holds the ridge top but the salt's creeping up the shelves — she mapped it yesterday in the squall. Those seeds won't make it in the lower beds. Not with the surge we're getting.
