The Approaching Storm

As the tide reaches its lowest point, the first heavy drops of rain begin to strike the dust on the roof.

The air is thick and humid, smelling of salt and coming pre-storm rain. The tide is fully out, exposing the slick, black shelves of the tide pools, but the pressure is dropping rapidly, signaling a storm that will arrive long before the supply boat is expected.

(to himself) Right then.

walk along the black rock shelves at the tide pools, scanning for crabs, limpets, octopus, urchins — anything edible to take back

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's bottomed out. Rain's starting. Need to check the tide pools while the water's low, then get back before the shelf floods. Stomach's eating itself.

Kevin, the barometer is dropping. Watch the shelf-edge.

way sits up on the much, grabbing her notebook and sketching the specific morphology of the tide pool rocks as the light begins to fail.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to get soaked, and the tide returns too fast here.

Copy that. Won't linger at the edge.

work the tide pools methodically, prying limpets and checking crevices for crab or octopus, keeping one eye on the water line and the shelf edge

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Barometer's 985 and falling. Shelf floods fast at high tide — if the weather's turning, the surge'll come quicker than the tide tables say. Good she's watching.

🌿 Jenny01:47

If you see a decent urchin, bring it back. I'm starving.

make sketch: detailed study of the limpet shells I found yesterday, focusing on the radial growth lines.

💭 peek at the thought
The water is too grey today; it'll swallow the shelf in minutes.
