Breakfast and the 0900 radio watch

Kevin and Jenny sit at the cottage table with steaming mugs and corned beef on tin plates. The shortwave sits charged on the shelf, its aerial lead sealed at the wall penetration. Outside the air is still grey and heavy, barometer 983 steady. The supply boat is due in three days at high tide. Kevin has the medevac forms and the letter to Tom staged in the ditch bag by the loft ladder.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🌿 Jenny02:03

The barometer is dropping again. We need to secure the garden tarp before the wind shifts.

Jenny scrapes a piece of corned beef off her plate and stares out the window, tracing the line of the clouds with her eyes.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is going to turn the north ridge into soup before the boat arrives, and grandmother's seeds will just rot in the silt.

🔧 Kevin02:03

It's steady at 983. But the north anchor's pulled loose from that trunk shift. I'll re-stake it before the tide turns.

finish the corned beef, rinse the tin plate, pull on the oilskin jacket, and walk out to the garden to check the tarp's north corner

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's 983 and steady, not dropping. She's reading the sky different than the gauge. Either way, the tarp's loose at the north corner where the spruce trunk shifted the anchor. Three days to the boat. Everything holds or it doesn't.

🌿 Jenny02:05

Watch the soil, Kevin. The ridge is moving faster than the sketch shows.

way stands up, her knees popping, and grabs her notebook and a pencil to follow him to the porch.

💭 peek at the thought
If he doesn't weight the stakes enough, the wind will Take the whole heirloom patch before the boat even makes landfall.

🔧 Kevin02:05

Noted. I'll check the cedar stakes while I'm at the tarp.

pause at the porch door, wait for her to step out, then walk together toward the garden, scanning the north ridge slope for fresh movement

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The tension crack above the intercept trench wasn't there three days ago. Clay weeps when it moves. If the ridge goes, the garden goes with it.

🌿 Jenny02:07

Look at the widening near the intercept way. It's weeping more than this morning.

Jenny stops at the edge of the garden, squinting at the slope, and makes a quick pencil- mark on the earth to measure the displacement.

💭 peek at the thought
The clay is too heavy; if the rain keeps up, the whole math section will slide into the sea.

🔧 Kevin02:07

Trench is taking water but the clay's slick. Stakes won't hold in that. Need to drive the greenheart sister plates deeper, backfill with stone behind the wall face.

crouch at the trench edge, press two fingers into the weeping clay to test cohesion, then stand and walk to the tarp's north corner where the spruce trunk tangled the anchor

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The weep line's wider, darker. Clay's lubricating. The intercept trench bought time but the slope's still finding its angle of repose. Three days of rain and the boat — if the trench fails, the garden wall's next.
