Evening at the shrine
Kevin and Jenny walk the ridge path together toward the ring of weathered stones. The tide is high now, surf audible on the reef. The barometer holds at 984 hPa. They carry the letter from the trust and the small softwood carving inscribed 'I'm still here'.
Kevin and Jenny placed the softwood carving at the old shrine and began walking back toward the cottage as the evening deepened. The air remained thick and still, the barometer steady at 985 hPa with high tide lapping the shore below.
The air is too thick. It feels like we're breathing lukewarm soup.
Stop by the largest stone and run a finger over a worn name.

Barometer's holding. Air's just doing what air does before a turn.
walk to the shrine stones and stand beside her, the softwood carving in my coat pocket

It's not just air, Kevin. It's the island deciding.
Reach for the carving from his pocket and place it beside the largest stone, the carved word 'I'm still here' facing outward.

Kevin — watch her place the carving, then let my hand rest on the cold stone beside it

"E" was here before the lighthouse. Before the keeper's cottage. Before us.
Trace the carved letters with my fingertip, then pull out my field notebook and sketch the arrangement of stones around the carving.

The trust letter. It's back at the cottage. Meant to leave it here.
turn and start walking back down the ridge path toward the cottage
