Night at the cottage

They sit at the kitchen table in the lamplight. Kevin eats corned beef and limpets from a tin mug; Jenny sips limpet broth. The shortwave crackles on 2182. Outside, the tide is high and the air is thick. The supply boat is due in two days.

The air is heavy and still as the cloud cover thickens over the flat sky. Inside the cottage, the low light of the lantern flickers against the walls while the rats continue scratching in the pantry. The tide is receding, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools, but the focus remains on the boat's arrival forty-eight hours away.

Boat in two days. High tide window. Yanmar needs one more load test tomorrow morning before they show.

eat from the tin mug, wipe the rim with thumb, set it down and reach for the shortwave handset to adjust squelch

💭 peek at the thought
Two days. The barometer holding steady at 985 means the window holds. Need to run the Yanmar at load one more time before they arrive — confirm the vibration fix didn't walk. And check the dinghy's stern spring chafe point where it leads over the gunwale.

🌿 Jenny03:37

I'll check the vibration after breakfast. I need to finish the sketch of the ridge first.

Open the notebook to the sketch and trace the line of the tension crack with a charcoal pencil.

💭 peek at the thought
Two days. If the wind shifts north, we'll be dealing with the salt-spray all week again.

Take your time. Crack's not moving fast.

spoon the last of the corned beef from the mug, chew slow, watch the shortwave's tuning needle drift in the lamplight

💭 peek at the thought
She's steady enough to work. The ankle's holding. Let her finish the sketch — she sees things I don't on that slope.

🌿 Jenny03:39

It's widening, Kevin. The drainage is failing on that slope.

Press the pencil harder, shading the widening gap where the earth meets the basalt.

💭 peek at the thought
It's moving. I can see the soil pulling away every time it rains.
