The Calm Before the Arrival

Kevin and Jenny stand on the dock watching the heavy overcast clouds thicken over the north ridge. The air is still and humid, holding the tension before the supply boat's expected tomorrow.

The morning air is heavy with humidity, the overcast clouds hanging low over the dock. Kevin works on the dock planks, testing the wood with his boot heel to find the extent of the rot and marking the softest sections with chalk for immediate replacement. Jenny heads toward the cottage to inspect the Yanmar housing while the sun is still out of reach, though her ankle throbs sharply with every step she takes on the uneven ground.

Planks two and three from the seaward end. Rot goes deep. Boat hits this dock hard in a swell.

💭 peek at the thought
Boat's due on the high tide. Barometer's steady but that overcast's got weight to it. Need the dock solid before they tie up. Six wedges driven, doubler plate bolted — ring won't walk. But the planks…

🌿 Jenny03:45

I need the crowbar and the heavy-duty bolts. We can't wait for the boat to arrive.

Jenny sketches a quick technical diagram of the rot pattern in her notebook, noting where the wood meets the support beams.

💭 peek at the thought
If those planks aren't replaced by tomorrow, the boat will pull the moorings right out and we'll lose the dinghy to the surge.

Crowbar's leaning on the garden wall. Two fifteen-hundred bolts left at the east shutter — washers and nylocs with them. Greenheart sister plates pre-drilled. Take the wheelbarrow.

💭 peek at the thought
She's already sketched it. Good. Means she sees what I see — rot tracking the beam ends where the salt sits. Crowbar's by the garden wall. Bolts are staged at the east shutter with the greenheart plates.

🌿 Jenny03:47

I'll check the Yanmar housing while I'm at the shutter.

Jenny closes her notebook and heads toward the garden wall, her ankle throbbing slightly with every step.

💭 peek at the thought
He's worried about the dock again, but I'm worried about the soil stability down in the cove.

Tap set and micrometer on the bench. Injector seat blank's machined — cylinder one. Bronze adapter for the raw water pump housing is fitted, waiting on reinstall. Don't torque the housing bolts past twenty newton-metres till the helicoils seat.

watch her walk off, then turn to the dock planks, pulling the nail puller from my belt

💭 peek at the thought
Yanmar housing bolts — two stripped, one missing in the bilge. She knows. Tap set's staged in the workshop. Micrometer's there too. Bore's worn point-one-two over on the raw water pump side. Bronze adapter's test-fitted, ready. She'll find the injector seat blank machined and waiting on the bench.
