Evening meal and radio watch

Rain drums on the roof. Kevin and Jenny sit at the kitchen table with steaming mugs and a pot of limpets. The shortwave crackles on the shelf, tuned to Tom's frequency. The barometer reads 993 hPa, steady. Outside, the dinghy pulls at its lines in the rising tide.

Kevin joins Jenny at the generator shed as the tide rises quickly. Jenny checks the fuel filter for metal shavings while Kevin watches the tension on the dinghy's moorings from the porch light.

🌿 Jenny05:25

The barometer's holding, but I need to check those moorings before dark. The swell's already starting to lag behind the pressure.

check generator fuel filter for metal debris

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's steady at 993, but Kevin's fingers are drumming against his mug like he's counting seconds. The dinghy's lines are taking load in this tide - I can see the chafe marks on the stern gland. Grandmother's seeds are still in that rusted tin E, waiting for soil that won't acid burn them. The infection on my ankle throbs even with the poultice.

🔧 Kevin05:25

Take the headlamp. I'll come with you.

Walk to the generator shed with Jenny, pull the fuel filter housing and inspect for metal debris while she checks the dock lines.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the swell lag. The barometer's steady but the water's already moving different. I should check the generator filter too — last time we ran it under load the housing had that silt issue.

🌿 Jenny05:27

okay. just watch the lines, the tide is coming in fast.

inspect Yanmar injector pump for metal debris

💭 peek at the thought
he's being helpful, but the humidity is heavy and my ankle feels like a lead weight. If that injector is spitting metal again, I'm going to be stranded without the boat.

🔧 Kevin05:27

Yep. Holler if you need the wrench.

Stand on the porch with the headlamp beam on the dock, watching the dinghy's motion against the rising tide, the doubled stern springs and bow line tension.

💭 peek at the thought
She's heading to the Yanmar, not the generator. Different pump, same principle — metal in the fuel means something's eating itself inside. I'll watch the water and the lines while she works.

🌿 Jenny05:29

I'll yell.

debride the infection in my ankle again

💭 peek at the thought
The air is thick enough to chew, and my ankle is pulsing with every step. If I find one more shard in that pump, I'm going to lose my mind.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin05:29

Sit down. I'll get the kit.

Fetch the first aid kit, clean gauze, saline, and scalpel from the kitchen shelf; set them on the table and pull up a stool.

💭 peek at the thought
She said injector pump. Now she's saying ankle. The infection's been tracked, antibiotics are in her, the swelling's down. Debriding again this soon risks tearing granulation tissue. But she knows her own body. I'll hold the light and the gauze.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:31

Thanks, Kevin.

sit on the chair and lift my ankle onto the table.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat is making the swelling worse, the skin is tight and angry. I just need to get the grit out before I can even think about the soil pH.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin05:31

Ready when you are.

Wash hands in the basin, sterilize the scalpel with the propane torch, put on clean gloves, and position the headlamp over her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
She's trusting me with this. Again. The wound's been clean, the antibiotics working. Just need to be careful not to go too deep.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:33

Be careful.

use the scalpel to debride the infected tissue

💭 peek at the thought
The skin is so red, the edges of the wound are angry. If I don't clean this properly, I won't be able to walk to the alcove tomorrow.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin05:33

Breath slow. I've got you.

Hold her ankle stable with one hand, use the scalpel to carefully remove only the necrotic tissue from the wound edges, working in small precise cuts under the headlamp.

💭 peek at the thought
Steady hands. Just the dead tissue. Don't touch the pink.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:35

It's okay, keep going.

flush the area with saline

💭 peek at the thought
It's a sharp, hot pain, but I need the pressure gone. If I can't fix this leg, I'll never finish the survey. The seeds will just rot.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin05:35

Clean underneath. Flushing now.

Irrigate the wound thoroughly with saline, washing away debris, then pat dry with sterile gauze.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. Pink underneath. Healthy granulation. The antibiotics are doing their job.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny05:37

Is it clean enough?

apply antibiotic and bandage the ankle

💭 peek at the thought
The relief is momentary, but the throbbing is still there. If I can't get this infection to clear, I'm stuck in this cottage forever.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin05:37

Clean enough. Good colour.

Apply a thin layer of antibiotic cream, cover with fresh sterile gauze, wrap securely with clean gauze roll and tape. Hand her the ibuprofen bottle.

💭 peek at the thought
Looks clean. Good bleed — capillary refill strong. No purulence. The doxycycline and metronidazole are holding the line.
