NIGHT - The storm intensifies

The rain turns to a downpour, and the wind picks up, howling through the radio mast.

Kevin checked the cottage seal and noted the pressure drop as the salt spray began to penetrate the kitchen. Jenny tuned the shortwave radio and caught a broadcast about a political deadlock in Israel before focusing on her throbbing ankle.

Kevin — walk to the porch door and check the seal at the bottom, then secure the storm lantern on the table so it won't blow over.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's shifted west-northwest. That'll drive swell straight into the dock face. The sister brace on the north piling held at high tide, but sustained pressure on the new bolts is different from a single cycle. Need to check the tell-tales at first light.

Check the radio wires again, Kevin. It's humming.

Sit up in bed and wrap the ankle tighter with the cold pack.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is going to rips the tarp off the way shelter if I don't do something.

On it.

Cross the kitchen to the radio shelf, pull the headset off the hook, and listen to the shortwave — check if the hum's on receive or just the aerial rattling.

💭 peek at the thought
She hears it too. The aerial lead runs right past the chimney — wind vibration on the insulator or the coax itself humming in the gable. If the tape failed at the wall penetration, we lose the aerial in this blow.

🌿 Jenny08:31

It's just static. The pressure is dropping fast.

Reach for the notebook on the nightstand and sketch the pattern the rain is making on the glass.

💭 peek at the thought
If that's the radio, I'm going to lose my mind in this dark.

Barometer? (quiet) 992 and falling.

Step back to the porch door, crack it open, and hold a wet finger to the air — feeling for wind shift and pressure on the face.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the barometer without looking at it. The hum's gone quiet on receive — likely the coax vibrating in the mast bracket, not a short. But if the wind keeps rising, the bracket itself could work loose. That mast took a lightning strike two winters back; the bracket's never been the same.

🌿 Jenny08:33

Close the door, Kevin. The salt spray is getting into the kitchen.

Pull the quilt up to my chin and focus on the throb in my knee.

💭 peek at the thought
It's going to break before the boat even gets here.
