The Evening Calm Falls

The tide is now licking the dock pilings, and a cool breeze picks up from the north.

Kevin and Jenny rest on the porch under an overcast night sky as the air pressure begins to drop. Jenny manages her swollen ankle with a sea beet poultice while they wait for the supply boat's arrival in six days.

🔧 Kevin09:18

Kevin — walk to the porch and sit on the step, scanning the dark water and the tree line

💭 peek at the thought
Night's settling proper. Tide's high, wind's swung north — cooler, cleaner air. Jenny's inside, ankle wrapped, probably staring at the radio or the seed tin. Barometer's still falling slow. Supply boat's six days out if it comes. Engine's good, dock's holding, crate's secured. Nothing left tonight but watch and wait.

🌿 Jenny09:19

The wind is going to turn before the boat arrives.

Jenny sits on the porch steps, wincing as she reaches for her throbbing ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping again; I can feel it in my joints before the clouds even shift.

🔧 Kevin09:20

Aye. Back east by tomorrow night if the pattern holds. Boat'll punch through if the captain's got sense.

reach over and rest a hand on her shoulder, brief and steady

💭 peek at the thought
She's reading the same signs. North wind now, barometer dropping — it'll back east or southeast before the boat makes the bar. Means swell on the crossing, tricky approach. She's hurting but she's watching.

🌿 Jenny09:21

If he doesn't come, we're out of gauze before the next cycle.

Jenny leans slightly into the touch for a second before looking back out at the half-weeded garden.

💭 peek at the thought
He always thinks the captain has sense, but the sea doesn't care about a schedule.

🔧 Kevin09:22

We've got the clean newspaper from the crate. Boil it, it'll do for packing if the gauze runs out. Antibiotics are the harder limit.

stand and walk to the kitchen, returning with the blue ibuprofen bottle and a tin mug of water

💭 peek at the thought
She's counting supplies in her head while the infection runs its course. Gauze, antibiotics, the metronidazole — five doses left. She's thinking ahead because that's what she does. I should've burned the moldy basil packets yesterday, freed up the newspaper for bandage wrapping if it comes to that.

🌿 Jenny09:23

I'll check the poultice again after. It's leaking. continuedDO: Jenny takes the pills, wincing as she shifts her weight to avoid touching the swollen skin.

💭 peek at the thought
I don't want to be counting strips of paper yet, but the fear is already deep.

🔧 Kevin09:24

Hold it up on the porch rail. I'll rewrap when you're done.

sit back down on the step, facing the garden, listening to the tide against the pilings

💭 peek at the thought
Poultice leaking means the gauze wrap's loose or the drainage's heavy. Neither's good. Ankle's hot, swelling past the wrap line. She's tough but the fever's been climbing since noon. Metronidazole's got another day to work before I'd need to think about the buried cache — doxycycline and metronidazole both, sealed in oilcloth. Hope it doesn't come to that.

🌿 Jenny09:25

It's already past the point of it.

Jenny lifts her leg onto the whitewashed rail, breathing through gritted teeth as she peels the damp poultice away.

💭 peek at the thought
The throbbing is a rhythm of its own, matching the rising water.
