Preparing for the rising tide

Kevin and Jenny stand on the south dock as the tide begins to swell against the pilings. Jenny checks the tension on the dinghy's mooring lines while Kevin watches the thickening cloud cover over the island.

Kevin retrieved the wheelbarrow loaded with greenheart sister plates and hardware from the garden shed and brought it to the dock. Jenny, favoring her injured ankle, fetched the cordless drill and met him there. Together they began assessing the south piling rot for a full sistering repair.

The dock is groaning, Kevin. Help me check the spring line.

Pull on the rope of the dinghy's moor, testing the weight against the rising water.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is rising faster than the charts predicted; if that swell hits, those rotten planks will take the dinghy.

Breast line first. Spring's slack until the dinghy hits the fenders.

Walk to the seaward cleat, grab the breast line, haul hand-over-hand to take the shock load off the piling mortise, cleat it hard.

💭 peek at the thought
Dock's talking. Not the planks — the landward beam. Sound travels different when the rot's that deep. She's on the spring line but the real load's on the breast line and the piling mortise. If the south piling shifts under this swell...

Look at the gap on the south piling—it's giving through.

Squat down to press a thumb against the timber near the waterline, checking for softness.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so quick with the mechanics, but doesn't see the wood roting from the inside out.

Wedges are biting but the wood behind's punk. Need to sister the piling proper — greenheart plates both sides, through-bolted. Not a patch. A replacement.

Crouch beside her, probe the gap with the tip of the crowbar, feel for the depth of the rot behind the wedges.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Gap at the waterline means the mortise has opened — the ring's working loose in the greenheart. Oak wedges are holding but the timber behind them is spongy. Every swell pumps water and grit deeper. We lose that piling, the whole seaward corner goes.

🌿 Jenny00:25

We need the greenheart plates from the shed. I'll get the drill.

Stand up slowly, wincing as the ankle throbs, and shift weight to the good leg.

💭 peek at the thought
If we don't sister it now, the next storm is going to take the whole jetty before the boat even arrives.

🔧 Kevin00:25

Wheelbarrow's by the garden wall. Plates, two 150mm through-bolts, washers, nylocs, the 19mm socket, torque wrench. I'll meet you at the dock. Don't carry the drill up the path — wheel it.

Turn toward the garden shed, stride lengthened to cover ground fast, left hand already reaching for the barrow handles.

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving too much on that ankle. The swelling's not gone down — antibiotics need time and she's giving them none. But she's not wrong. Plates are staged under the eaves. Drill's in the workshop. Two trips or one if we use the wheelbarrow.
