← Day 798

the keeper's cottage · day 798 · evening

The storm breaks

Kevin and Jenny are together inside the cottage as the first heavy drops of rain hit the roof and the wind picks up through the trees.

The trade wind holds steady as the heat of the 29° evening lingers over the island. Inside the cottage, the fire crackles, providing small relief from the humidity, shadows dancing against the walls as Jenny sits by the stove, her ankle swollen and throbbing despite the latest poultice, while Kevin watches the horizon for the first true clouds.

🌿 Jenny00:55

We should get the wood fire going before it pours.

Jenny leans heavily on the kitchen table, wincing as she limps toward the stove to fetch a piece of dry wood.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast, and my ankle is throbbing in time with the wind. I need to get the stove started before it gets dark.

🔧 Kevin00:56

Sit. I'll get it.

walk to the wood stove, grab a dry armful from the stack by the porch door, and build the fire

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving too much on that ankle. The swelling hasn't gone down since the debridement. She should be off it entirely, not feeding the stove.

🌿 Jenny00:57

Thanks. Just... don't let it smoke.

Jenny sinks into the kitchen chair, propping her swollen ankle up on a stool and watching the fire catch.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always trying to be helpful when I'm at my most miserable. My ankle feels like it's on fire.

🔧 Kevin00:58

Won't.

arrange the kindling, light a match, and feed the fire until it takes clean; then wipe my hands on my trousers and lean against the doorframe watching the flame catch

💭 peek at the thought
The smoke means the chimney's drafting wrong again. Probably the wind shifting round the corner of the cottage. I'll need to check the cap at first light.

🌿 Jenny00:59

It's going to be a rough night.

Jenny exhales a long, shaky breath, her eyes fixed on the flames while she rubs the throbbing in her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the heat is real. The wind is starting to howl now.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:00

The pilings'll hold. We sistered them proper.

pull the door shut against the gust, latch it tight, and turn back to the room

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's still rising but the wind's backing southwest — that'll drive the swell straight into the cut. Dock'll take a pounding. South piling repair held at low tide but the sisters aren't through-bolted deep enough for sustained surge.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:01

I hope so.

Jenny reaches for her way on the table, her fingers tracing the edge of the paper as she watches the rain lashes the window.

💭 peek at the thought
I hope he's right. If that dock goes, I'm stranded without the boat.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:02

Coffee?

move to the stove, check the kettle, and pour two tin mugs from the pot simmering on the back burner

💭 peek at the thought
She's tracing the letter from the trust. Hasn't opened it since the supply boat dropped it. The offer's still sitting there — mainland post, pension implications, a way off this rock if she wants it. I haven't asked which way she's leaning.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:03

Please.

Jenny takes the mug, the warmth seeping into her cold palms as she winces and shifts her weight again.

💭 peek at the thought
God, I need the warmth. My head is pounding as much as my leg.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:04

Drink it slow.

set my own mug on the table, pull the chair out opposite her, and sit heavy — letting the silence stretch while the rain hammers the roof

💭 peek at the thought
She's cold. The infection's cleared but the circulation in that foot's still sluggish. Should've made her keep the blanket on instead of letting her hobble to the table.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:05

It's hot.

Jenny takes a tiny sip, wincing at the heat, and looks at the fire instead of his eyes.

💭 peek at the thought
He's watching me. He knows the poultice isn't working fast enough.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:06

Let it cool.

wrap my hands around my mug, blow across the rim, and wait

💭 peek at the thought
She won't look at me. Hasn't properly since the medevac forms got signed. The letter from the trust, the supply boat ETA, Tom's unopened letter in the dry bag — all of it sitting between us like tide debris. I'm not good at the talking part. Never was.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny01:07

I'm trying.

Jenny leans her head back against the wall, closing her eyes for a second as the throb in her ankle pulses in time with the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm so tired. Every muscle feels like it's made of lead.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:08

Get some rest. I'll check the lines before high tide.

finish my coffee, set the mug down, and push back from the table

💭 peek at the thought
The wind's gusting hard now — shutters rattling on the east side. Rain's horizontal. If the barometer holds rising we'll miss the worst of it, but the dock'll still take a beating at high tide in three hours. Should check the mooring lines on the dinghy before then. She needs sleep more than talk. The antibiotics finished yesterday, ankle's clean, but the exhaustion's bone-deep.
