The Calm Before the Storm

The wind is picking up, and the air is heavy with salt. Kevin and Jenny sit in the glow of the fire as the first drops of rain lash the windowpane.

Kevin rebandaged Jenny's ankle with fresh gauze and antiseptic cream, securing it firmly but not too tight. Jenny examined the wound edges and noted the infection boundary had not spread beyond her earlier pen marks. The rain continued steadily on the cottage roof.

🔧 Kevin01:09

Jenny, your ankle's still bleeding through the gauze.

Check the first aid kit for clean bandages.

Barometer steady at 1017, but the air tastes like storm. Twenty minutes till it breaks.

I know. I'll wrap it again, tighter.

Jenny pulls her leg up to her chest, wincing as the movement shifts against the swelling.

💭 peek at the thought
It's just the heat, it's making the skin too tight to hold.

Let me do it. You'll bind it too tight and lose circulation.

Move to the kitchen shelf, retrieve the gauze tin and antiseptic cream.

She's compensating on the wrong leg. The limp's gotten worse since the tide pools.

🌿 Jenny01:13

I can do this myself—

Jenny's hand moves to push Kevin back, but then stops when she sees the raw red edge of her skin where the gauze has caught.

💭 peek at the thought
He doesn't understand that the poultice needs pressure to draw out the infection.
