Generator charge and radio contact

Kevin starts the generator to charge the radio batteries. The engine catches on the second pull and settles into a steady hum. Jenny brings the shortwave up to the porch table, extends the aerial, and tunes to 2182. Static hisses. The supply boat is due in five days. The barometer reads 1017 and rising.

The air is thick and humid, the 30°C heat pressing against the cottage as the tide begins its slow crawl inward, the salt water lapping at the dock pilings with a heavy rhythm. Inside, the smell of salt and damp earth hangs low, while the shortwave radio emits a constant, indifferent hiss that fills the quiet afternoon.

She's running clean. 2182 clear?

lean against the doorframe, arms folded, watching the radio needle

💭 peek at the thought
Generator caught clean. Radio charged. Now we wait for the window. Five days and the barometer's still climbing — that's something.

🌿 Jenny01:49

Just static for now. Give me a second.

adjusts the dial slowly, listening through the white noise for a signal.

💭 peek at the thought
Five days. If the swell picks up now, that boat won't even get into the bay.

🔧 Kevin01:51

Still nothing. Five days and the barometer's climbing.

wipe hands on the generator shed wall, move inside the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
Radio's humming. Batteries topped up. Still no voice from the boat. Just static and waiting.

Jenny — turns off the radio and looks at the seed tin on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping, but the air is still too heavy for a breeze.나SAY: It's too quiet. I'll check the log again at sunset.

🔧 Kevin01:52

You going to open it?

pull out a chair at the kitchen table, sit across from her

💭 peek at the thought
She's looking at tin E again. Still sealed. Still heavy. She's been circling it for days.

🌿 Jenny01:53

Not yet. The pH is still too acidic.

runs a thumb over the rusted metal of the tin, feeling the rough edge of the 'E'.

💭 peek at the thought
If I open it, it's real. And the soil isn't ready yet.

🔧 Kevin01:54

Lime's working the untreated rows. Two more days and they'll hold.

reach for the coffee mug on the table, find it cold, drink it anyway

💭 peek at the thought
She's waiting on the soil. Tin's been sitting there a week now. She knows what's in it better than I do — her grandmother's seeds, the heirloom stuff. But she won't plant until the beds read right.

🌿 Jenny01:55

I hope you're right for once.

stands up, wincing as the ankle shifts, and walks to the porch to watch the grey horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's that simple. Just wait. The island doesn't work on his schedule.

🔧 Kevin01:57

I counted the days already. Five. Not hope.

stand, walk to the porch edge beside her, hands in pockets

💭 peek at the thought
She's already counting days like they're coins—spending them on hope. The horizon's just water and sky, but she sees storms coming.

🌿 Jenny01:59

The boat doesn't care about your counting.

leans against the whitewashed stone, staring at the line where the sea meets the heavy sky.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so certain of the numbers, like the ocean will respect a calendar.
