Waiting for the Tide

The tide has now submerged the lower steps of the dock, and the heavy air remains still as the sun begins to dip.

Kevin and Jenny sit on the porch steps as the heavy wet season air settles over the cottage. They watch the high tide lap against the pilings, enduring the heat and knowing the supply boat is still five days away.

🔧 Kevin01:59

Kevin — walk to the dock with the wheelbarrow, check the landward beam at waterline.

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's eating the dock steps. Another hour and the landward beam will be underwater. Should've sistered it at dawn when the water was out. Now I'll be working in the dark with a headlamp and cold hands.

🌿 Jenny02:01

The tide is too high for the wheelbarrow, Kevin. Wait until it's back out.

Stand up slowly, rubbing my aching ankle, and walk to the porch to watch the water.

💭 peek at the thought
He's checking the beams again; the salt is eating that wood faster than I can patch it.

🔧 Kevin02:01

Fair enough. Coffee's still warm if you want it.

Lean the crowbar against the garden wall, go back to the porch and pour a second mug from the kettle.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. Wheelbarrow'll float before it rolls in this. Greenheart plates and the through-bolt can wait till the water drops. No sense fighting the tide.

🌿 Jenny02:03

Thanks.

Take the mug from him, sit down on the porch steps, and look out at the grey water.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm so hungry I could eat the notebook, but the coffee is almost enough for now.

🔧 Kevin02:04

Kevin — sit beside her on the top step, mug in both hands, watching the water climb the pilings.

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring the ankle still. Red line hadn't reached the knee this morning but the heat in it... antibiotics are holding, barely. Four doses of doxy left. Metronidazole done. If the supply boat doesn't make it through the window...

🌿 Jenny02:05

(quietly) The northern shelf should be accessible tomorrow at low tide. I need to check if the soil there is still viable for planting Grandmother's seeds.

Trace the rim of my mug on the wooden step with my finger, feeling for any loose splinters.

💭 peek at the thought
The dock is taking another piece of itself while we talk about coffee and tides.

🔧 Kevin02:06

Soil held last week. Lime beds at six-eight. Untreated five-five. You got the pH strips in your pack?

Sip coffee, eyes on the tide line creeping up the beach.

💭 peek at the thought
North shelf. She's planning next season already. Ankle half-rotten, supply boat god-knows-when, and she's thinking about soil viability for seeds her grandmother saved. Stubborn. Like her grandmother, probably.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:07

I have them in the kit. But I need to test the northern shelf specifically before I even think about opening the tin.

Take a slow sip of the coffee, wincing at the heat, and look down at the half-weeded garden behind the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
Five-five is too acidic for the heirlooms; they'll rot before they even sprout.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin02:08

North shelf's clay-heavy. Drains slow. Salt sits.

Set mug down, pull the radio notebook from the shelf, flip to the soil pH log page, hold it out to her.

💭 peek at the thought
She won't open the tin till she's sure. Won't risk her grandmother's seeds on guesswork. That's the difference between us — I'd plant and pray. She tests and knows. Both ways get you fed. Both ways get you dead.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny02:09

Then I'll have to dig deeper than I thought. Or find a spot with more drainage.

Take the notebook, scan the way numbers, and sigh at the 5.5 reading.

💭 peek at the thought
If the salt is sitting, the clay will just suffocate the roots. I can't risk Grandmother's seeds on a swamp.
