Preparing the evening meal

Kevin and Jenny meet in the kitchen as the smell of boiling limpets fills the room.

The heavy rain from the west has turned the ground into a weeping slurry, making the brush removal project impossible. Inside the cottage, the leak in the shutter is causing a steady drip that requires a bucket placed near the foundation. The tide is low, exposing the tide pools, but the focus remains on preparing for the boat's arrival tomorrow.

🌿 Jenny05:41

The boat is due tomorrow. We need to be ready at the dock.

Jenny sets the bucket of limpets on the wooden table and begins cleaning the shells with a small knife.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at the radio again, wondering if the boat will actually come through this weather.

🔧 Kevin05:41

Boat's not coming in this pressure. Barometer's 1006 and falling. Captain Mendez doesn't run when it drops below 1010.

Walk to the porch and check the barometer reading again, then set the wrench on the workbench.

💭 peek at the thought
The bolt snapped clean at the head. Means the piling's taking more load than the timber can hold. I'll need the come-along and the sister plate tonight at low tide, or the next swell takes the whole stringer.

🌿 Jenny05:43

If it doesn't come, we'll be short on the supplies for the next cycle.

Jenny stops scrubbing a limet and looks at the rain lashing against the window.

💭 peek at the thought
He always expects the worst from the sea before the clouds have even hit the ridge.

We've got fifteen hundred days of food. Water tank's full. Generator's sound. The only thing that boat brings we can't live without is mail.

Pull the kettle off the stove, pour two mugs of the limpet broth, set one on the table in front of her.

💭 peek at the thought
She's counting on that boat. Counting on the world working the way it's supposed to. I stopped doing that around day three hundred.

🌿 Jenny05:45

I need the new filters for the Yanmar anyway.

way takes the mug, her hands warming against the ceramic, and watches the rain blur the edge of the island.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's just about mail, but I'm thinking about the seeds in that tin.

🔧 Kevin05:45

The old filter housing's stripped. I helicoiled it last week. Holds fine. We don't need what's on that boat.

Sit opposite her, blow on my mug, watch the steam rise and catch the porch light.

💭 peek at the thought
Filters I can make. Cut felt, stitch wire mesh, run diesel through charcoal if it comes to it. She's thinking about the engine because it's easier than thinking about the dock piling, or her ankle, or the letter in the dry bag.

🌿 Jenny05:47

Jenny — way takes a slow sip of the broth, the salt and heavy, and looks at the seed tin sitting on the counter.

💭 peek at the thought
way's so sure of the machine, but the soil is what's actually failing.그런SAY: It's not just the filters, Kevin. I need the specific reagents.

🔧 Kevin05:47

That tin's been on the counter since the crate wash. Salt'll eat the lid threads if you leave it.

Drink half the mug in one swallow, set it down hard, wipe my mouth with the back of my hand.

💭 peek at the thought
Tin E. Heavy, rusted, sealed. She's been turning it over in her hands for two days. Won't open it with me watching. Won't say why. The 'E' carved on the shrine stone, the one on this tin — same hand. Her grandmother's. She's waiting for me to ask, or waiting for the courage to open it alone.
