Evening at the cottage

Kevin and Jenny meet at the cottage porch as dusk settles. The barometer reads 1005 hPa and rising. A pot of limpet broth warms on the stove. The supply boat is due tomorrow at high tide. Kevin has the Yanmar load test in mind; Jenny carries her notebook and the grandmother's seed tin. The overcast holds, no rain yet.

The air is heavy with humidity as the cloud cover thickens over the island, signaling a coming front. Inside the cottage, the smell of boiling mackerel and drying herbs fills the space while the drip from the leaky shutter marks the passing minutes. The tide is at its peak, lapping high against the reinforced dock pilings.

Pressure's up a point. Boat's window holds if the wind doesn't back southwest.

Walk to the stove, lift the lid, check the broth.

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's turned. Rising slow but steady. Tomorrow's high tide window — if the swell holds, the boat makes it. Need to run the Yanmar under load one more time before they arrive, confirm the vibration fix didn't walk loose. And Jenny's carrying that tin like it's ordnance.

The ridge is moving faster than the sketches. We need to reinforce the wall before the rain.

Sit on the porch step, open the seed tin, and feel the air inside for moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come tomorrow, I'm out of fresh water by the next cycle.

Greenheart's cut. Plates under the eaves. Stakes by the garden shed. We do it first light, before the tide turns.

Set a mug on the porch rail, fill it from the pot, and hold it out to her.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The intercept trench bought time but the clay's weeping at the new crack. Greenheart plates are staged. Need to drive stakes and sister the wall before the next soak. But tomorrow the supply boat — can't be at the ridge and the dock both.

🌿 Jenny06:55

I'll check the seeds first. The ground is too weeping for the wall anyway.

Take the mug, feeling the warmth through the ceramic, and look out at the thickening clouds over the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always planning the next move while the current one still fails under us.

Seeds keep. Wall doesn't. But stakes won't bite in slurry. We wait for the ebb, let the ground firm.

Lean against the porch post, sip broth, watch the ridge line where the clouds hang low.

💭 peek at the thought
She's stalling. The wall needs doing and she knows it. But she's also right — driving stakes into weeping clay is pissing into wind. The supply boat's the real clock. If they land tomorrow, everything changes. If they don't...

🌿 Jenny06:57

If the soil doesn't hold, I'm just wasting my grandmother's life again.

Take a slow sip of the salty broth, tracing the rim of the mug with my thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
The island is always trying to take something back before I've even named it.

🔧 Kevin06:57

You didn't waste it. The tomato's fruiting. The sea beet's seeding. The purslane and mustard came back wild. That's not waste.

Set my mug down, pull the tin of heirloom packets from my pocket — the clean, dry ones — and hold it out without a word.

💭 peek at the thought
That's the heart of it. Not the wall. Not the ridge. The tin. Her grandmother's seeds. Every failure feels like losing her twice. I've seen her plant three gardens here. Watched two drown in salt, one burn in drought. She's not talking about soil.

🌿 Jenny06:59

The ridge is weeping, Kevin. If I plant now, the rain will just bury them.

Reach for the tin, my fingers trembling against the cold metal, and look at the dark clouds on the horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the wild ones, but those aren't the ones she saved.
